{"id":6675,"date":"2024-07-08T20:26:45","date_gmt":"2024-07-08T19:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/?p=6675"},"modified":"2024-08-06T20:37:18","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T19:37:18","slug":"why-were-the-soroptimists-at-the-chatham-carnival-with-amnesty-international","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/2024\/07\/08\/why-were-the-soroptimists-at-the-chatham-carnival-with-amnesty-international\/","title":{"rendered":"Why were the Soroptimists at the Chatham Carnival with Amnesty International?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On a cold and blustery Saturday in July, Janet Garnons-Williams and Carol McKeough, from Medway and Maidstone supported the Chatham community carnival by helping on the Amnesty International stall.<!--more--> The carnival is part of Medway Culture Fest 24 celebrating Medway\u2019s community, creativity and history.<\/p>\n<p>It was a very interesting and fun event, but the weather was destined to have its say. The very strong gusts of winds <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2024\/08\/Verena-Holmes.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6678 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2024\/08\/Verena-Holmes.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2024\/08\/Verena-Holmes.jpeg 240w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2024\/08\/Verena-Holmes-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>followed by the torrential rain that did not daunt the enthusiasm of the crowds watching the parade.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the many banners that included those celebrating the lives of Kent and Medway women, such as Verena Holmes (mechanical engineer) and Dame Kathleen Courtney (suffragist).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2024\/08\/Dame-Kathleen-Courtney-Suffragist.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6677 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2024\/08\/Dame-Kathleen-Courtney-Suffragist.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2024\/08\/Dame-Kathleen-Courtney-Suffragist.jpeg 320w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2024\/08\/Dame-Kathleen-Courtney-Suffragist-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>Janet and Carol encouraged people to sign up to the local group, but particularly to sign a letter to our new MP&#8217;s, pledging to protect human rights.
