STOP THE TRAFFIK Global Blanket Campaign

Many Soroptimist Clubs send in squares to the STOP THE TRAFFIK Global Blanket Campaign.

Recently Northern England Soroptimists presented a petition to 10 Downing Street. This was not your usual petition. This petition was a Global Blanket made up of hundreds of signatures on fabric squares.

STOP THE TRAFFIK have written a blog about Northern England Soroptimists Global Blanket – read the blog.

The Global Blanket Campaign

STOP THE TRAFFIK began the Global Blanket Campaign to make a stand against this global exploitation. The campaign encourages three actions:

  • Retailers take on more responsibility to ensure transparency in their supply chains
  • Consumers think about where their clothes come from
  • Governments around the world adopt legislation that explicitly prohibits forced labour and human trafficking in supply chains

The UK Government passed The Modern Slavery Act on March 26th 2015. Section 54 of the Act focuses on supply chain transparency. This is a significant step. However, legislation only has impact when implemented, and the law was only passed in the UK. We need to help government by lobbying corporations, and other nations.

How to get involved

It is simple to have your voice heard. Just follow these four easy steps:

  • Source a piece of material (ideally recycled!) and cut down to a 5.5inch x 5.5inch square
  • Sign your name on the square
  • Stitch, embellish and decorate in any way you like
  • Send your square to STOP THE TRAFFIK’s UK office

IMPORTANT – STOP THE TRAFFIK have asked to ensure you include contact information so that they can get in touch with updates.
