Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) 2018

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is held every two years in one of the Commonwealth countries.

This year it was the turn of the United Kingdom on, 16-20 April 2018. Meetings of Heads of Government were held at Buckingham Palace, with the retreat for Heads of Government taking place at Windsor Castle.

The theme for CHOGM 2018 was “Towards a common future”.

APD for Health , Rita Beaumont was our official delegate for the whole week, and Margaret Clark, APD for Advocacy represented us for 3 days.

Soroptimist International and SIGBI had already had input to the discussions prior to the main event during a consultation period.

A Women’s Forum, a People’s Forum, Youth Forum and Business Forum preceded the meeting of Heads of Government.

The Women’s Forum, organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat, reflected on some of the global challenges still faced by women, as part of a wider commitment to “leave no one behind” in the Commonwealth journey to 2030.

The Women’s Forum, under the theme “An Empowered Future for Women and Girls”, included plenary sessions and parallel thematic sessions discussing women’s empowerment.

Planned parallel sessions included sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) , ending female genital mutilation and ending early, forced and child marriage and eradicating forms of exploitation.
