On 28 September, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale hit Central Sulawesi in Indonesia. The resultant tsunami in Palu, Donggala and Mamuji hit speeds of 400 miles an hour with 6 metre waves, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
At the time the tsunami struck in Palu, a festival was being held on the beach. Many people were swept to their death and the aftermath is one of sheer devastation with liquefaction of the soil and thousands of homes “melting away”. Up to 1.5 million in the area may have been affected. So far, 59,000 people are estimated to have been displaced and more than 1,300 people have died. It is fear that numbers of both will continue to rise.
Through its partners and affiliates DEC member charities are already on the ground and are working tireless to address this complex and fast moving crisis.
