World Environment Day – 5 June 2019

World Environment Day on 5 June is the biggest annual event for positive environmental action.

This year World Environment Day brings ‘Air Pollution’ centre stage. China will host the global celebrations on this theme in the city of Hangzhou, as well as multiple cities in the country. Air pollution is a global emergency affecting everyone. China will now be leading the push and stimulating global action to save millions of lives.

The figures are startling. Approximately 7 million people die worldwide prematurely each year from air pollution and 92% of people worldwide do not breathe clean air.

World Environment Day 2019 will urge governments, industry, communities, and individuals to come together to explore renewable energy and green technologies, and improve air quality in cities and regions across the world.

As Soroptimists we can make small changes in our lifestyles e.g. promote the use of green fuels, stop food wastage, to contribute with positive environmental action. The enormity of the environmental crisis has not yet shaken the general public. Soroptimists must do what they do best – create awareness and advocate environmental sensitivity.
