Fairtrade Fortnight – 24 February – 8 March 2020

She deserves a living income. This was the Fairtrade theme in 2019.

Prosperity is often associated with thriving, flourishing, wealth and economic wellbeing. It is also associated with other factors like happiness and health.

In 2020, the theme is ‘she deserves Fairtrade’, an income which will enable her to thrive and have economic wellbeing. The aim is to continue with the mission to ensure that all farmers are paid fairly for their work and are able to earn a living income, starting with cocoa farmers in West Africa. The focus is continuing on women farmers.

Fairtrade work with farmers in a cooperative to ensure they are paid a minimum price for their produce and that they also receive the Fairtrade Premium. This is an additional amount of money which is paid to the cooperative to be spent on local community projects.

Sharing stories to change the world

To continue to get the Fairtrade message ‘out there’, in 2020 they are suggesting ‘storybombing’ your local community. These will be short case studies of women farmers, printed on card, which can be left in libraries, cafes, train stations and other places where people meet and may have a few minutes spare or given to work colleagues and friends. There are more details on the website. Are you a member of a Fairtrade community, could you join in, or make it a partnership joint initiative and raise awareness of Soroptimist as well?

£1.86 is the amount a cocoa farmer in West Africa needs to earn each day in order to achieve a living income. Currently, a typical cocoa farmer in Cote d’Ivoire lives on around 74p a day. Almost all cocoa farmers in West Africa live in poverty.

Receiving the Fairtrade Minimum Price and Premium has enabled Therese to send her children to school and give them opportunities she did not have. For Edith, being a Fairtrade certified farmer, has enabled her to access training and empowered her to diversify her income to bring in more money for her and her family.

Sharing stories is a powerful way to help people understand the difference they can make in the world by choosing Fairtrade. Help to share their stories.

Host a storytelling event, to tell their stories, showcase how your club has empowered women, sell Fairtrade chocolate based refreshments or take part in the Fairtrade plans to spread their stories with their brand new ‘storybombs’.
