Social Media

So just what is Social Media?

Social media is the general term used to describe a range of online communications channels (the media bit) dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration (the social bit). For our work as Soroptimists, we generally mean the Social Networking channels such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Flickr.

The sites or channels have many aspects in common which each other, but there are also differences between them which mean that one group of people may be more likely to use one and a different group will use another one depending on the circumstances. So, if we want to get our messages out to as many people as possible, then we need to consider using as many different channels as possible.

Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. According to some statistics, internet users in the UK spend more time using Facebook than any other website. Twitter is a free microblogging service that allows registered members to broadcast short posts called tweets. LinkedIn is a social networking site designed specifically for the business community. The goal of the site is to allow registered members to establish and document networks of people they know and trust professionally.

YouTube is a video sharing service where users can create their own profile, upload videos, watch, like and comment on other videos. SIGBI uses YouTube to publish videos which may be of interest to members or prospective members. Subscribe to the SIGBI YouTube channel.

Flickr is a popular photo-sharing and hosting service where people share and explore each other’s photos. SIGBI uses Flickr as a great big photo album – a place to store many of the photos sent to us by clubs and all the lovely pictures taken at conferences etc. View the SIGBI Flickr account.

Skype is not strictly speaking Social Media, but it can be very beneficial for Club activities as it is a free video conferencing program which anyone can use and saves time in travelling to meetings. View our How to Guide to Skype.
