Court Report

Soroptimists in the UK have supported the survivors of domestic abuse over many years.

Observations in Specialist Domestic Abuse Courts (SDACs) have been carried out in three regions of England – Northumbria and Wiltshire in 2017 and the Midlands in 2020 – to check whether these courts provide specialist support and a sympathetic and safe environment to enable domestic abuse survivors to give their evidence and have their case heard.

Around 80 Soroptimist observers volunteered some 2,000 hours of their time to attend SDACs, monitored how cases of domestic abuse were heard, the support given to survivors and how the courts operated.

Major shortcomings with the operation of these courts were identified and five key issues were found in each one of the three regions monitored in the reports leading to the conclusion that these Special Domestic Abuse Courts are far from as ‘special’ as they need to be.

The report on the work carried out in courts in the Midlands is now available.

This project is currently being rolled out with members observing SDACs in most other parts of England.
