<\/a><\/p>\nIn 2023-24 the club is focussing on three main areas:\u00a0 climate change, human rights and supporting communities. This links with two of SIGBI\u2019s five Ps on which we should be taking action: Planet and People. We are, of course, strongly committed to supporting women and girls to achieve their highest potential. At the same time, we are linked to the United Nations, which is a major supporter of human rights across the world.<\/p>\n
So, we have updated our awareness of issues facing the planet, have supported climate change action through the Middlesbrough Climate Action Forum, have joined in litter-picking initiatives and hope to progress the campaign about the mass deaths of crustaceans along our coastline. We visited a local not-for-profit company working to reduce the carbon footprint of major industrial processes such as steel-making and concrete-making.<\/p>\n
We have had excellent speakers on asylum and refugee issues, on housing and homelessness and on local support to victims of domestic violence. We made a substantive collection of Christmas gifts for women clients of My Sister\u2019s Place and their children.<\/p>\n
In the new year we will be focussing on community engagement with a community worker as speaker and also a Cleveland Local Resilience Officer telling us of her\u00a0 work to build resilience in communities which may be affected by flooding or other major disasters.<\/p>\n
We continue to have social event to which friends and family are invited: indeed, most of our meeting are now open to others. And, we welcome guests from neighbouring clubs and our local communities.<\/p>\n
