‘Overcoming the Odds’ is a book that had been put together by our members during first lockdown in 2020. The book was sold for \u00a310 and was well received by the readers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Recently, Middlesbrough Soroptimists decided that surplus copies of the book should be put to good use with local school children and their teachers with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science approaching.<\/p>\n

Teachers and female students involved in the recent Cleveland Scientific Institution Centenary Competition for Schools have now received copies.<\/p>\n

One secondary school, Outwood Academy Riverside<\/strong> in Middlesbrough, requested 40 books as class texts. Below is an e-mail received from school’s Science Technician, James Mallyon<\/strong>: \u201cThe books have been well received, and will be a great help in inspiring our female students and helping to tackle the gender gap in STEM. Each female student in each of our top sets, as well as both of our current science teachers will be issued a copy of this book, and we believe it will make a perfect gift for International Women’s Day next months. We also plan to keep a couple of copies in the library for all students to read at their leisure.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Inspirational educator Nicola Waller<\/strong>, who has been involved with the University of York\u2019s C<\/strong>hildren C<\/strong>hallenging I<\/strong>ndustry (CCI<\/strong>) project for many years in the Tees Valley and recently won a prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry Education award, will also distribute 20 copies to teachers from the Tees Valley who she is training in March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
