2025<\/strong><\/h4>\n

A Message from Georgie and the Public Speaking Competition Committee:<\/p>\n

Regretfully for several reasons, there will not be a Public Speaking competition this year.\u00a0 It has proven difficult to find a venue and date which suits everyone (without the responsibility of hosting falling to the same club again).\u00a0 We have not been able to solve this issue in time to give schools the opportunity to select candidates and see topics.<\/p>\n

At the December MAR meeting, five clubs indicated that they would support another competition.\u00a0 It is proposed that the organising committee meet soon to discuss the future of the competition based on that level of support.\u00a0 It may well be that we decide to plan for a competition in 2026 and having a break for a year might also allow us to recruit more committee members to share in the organisation and delivery of such an event.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, a very big thank you to all clubs and members who have supported the Public Speaking competition over the years and helped make it an enjoyable and worthwhile event that has benefitted hundreds of young people.<\/p>\n

20th Anniversary of\u00a0 the Public Speaking Competition\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

It was a delightful afternoon at the Midland Arden Region Public Speaking Competition in Bromsgrove.\u00a0 Georgie, who inaugurated the event 22 years ago, was thrilled to participate in celebrating the 20th anniversary by cutting the cake. Liz Every, President of Midland Arden Region, presented Georgie with not one, but two bouquets in recognition of her longstanding involvement.<\/p>\n

The judging panel, consisting of Amanda and Trish from SI Kenilworth & District, alongside head judge Catherine Williamson from Leamington Spa Soroptimists, had a challenging task due to the high standard of speeches delivered by competitors aged between 14 and 18. Each participant demonstrated a commendable level of dedication and effort in their presentations, reflecting their commitment to the competition.<\/p>\n

The winners were announced as follows:<\/p>\n

3rd prize (\u00a325) – Ella Bartlett from Stratford School<\/p>\n

2nd prize (\u00a375) – Evie Hodgetts from South Bromsgrove High School<\/p>\n

1st prize (\u00a3150) – Aoife McNamara from Langley School, Solihull<\/p>\n

Maureen Maguire, Immediate Past President of Soroptimists International, had the honour of presenting the prizes. Despite not securing a prize, Joe Brazenell from Kenilworth delivered a compelling speech emphasizing the importance of holding public figures to high standards, showcasing his dedication and potential for future success with the support of his family.<\/p>\n

MC Val Clark expertly managed the event.\u00a0 Tony Archer and Steve Parkes handled the timekeeping. Overall, it was an inspiring and uplifting afternoon for all involved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Public Speaking Winners 2024<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

Public Speaking Competition 2023<\/h4>\n

Soroptimist International President, Maureen Maguire, presided at the 19th<\/span> MAR Public Speaking Competition held at the Bromsgrove Methodist Centre.\u00a0 Georgie Larsen-Archer (SI Kenilworth) was delighted to welcome her and thanked Maureen for travelling all the way from Ireland especially to be there.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

There were eleven candidates, all of whom had worked very hard to meet the challenge of preparing and delivering a speech on a topic chosen from a given selection.<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering the fact that many adults would shrink from speaking to an audience, these young people all did themselves tremendous credit.<\/span><\/p>\n

First place went to Olivia Harvey from Bromsgrove and sponsored by SI Bromsgrove. Olivia\u2019s Mum clearly moved, came over to the judges after the decision and said,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI am so proud of her, she has worked so hard for this. She isn\u2019t an outgoing person usually and doing this has made all the difference to her self-confidence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Olivia Harvey from South Bromsgrove School and sponsored by SI Bromsgrove took the 1st place trophy and \u00a3150.<\/p>\n

Fred Kinney from Alderbrook School and sponsored by SI Solihull took the 2nd place trophy and \u00a375.<\/p>\n

Jayan Luharia from Tudor Grange Academy and sponsored by SI Solihull won the 3rd place trophy and \u00a325.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, March 16th<\/sup> 2019 MAR held their 17th Public Speaking Competition at the Crowne Plaza Solihull. The competition was of an extremely high standard.<\/p>\n

We were honoured to have with us the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress of Solihull,\u00a0 Sue Williams our Federation President and many other Federation Officers.<\/p>\n

Our grateful thanks go to the committee and fellow Soroptimists who enabled the day to be most successful.<\/p>\n

Public Speaking Competition 2018\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Saturday 17th<\/sup> March 2018, saw eleven inspirational entrants to the 16th Midland Arden Region Schools Public Speaking Competition. The event was held at Rugby Council Chamber.<\/p>\n

1st Prize was awarded to Sinead McCall sponsored by SI Stratford whose chosen topic was Human Trafficking \u2013 Modern Day Slavery.\u00a0 \u00a0How can we stop it?<\/span><\/h5>\n
2nd<\/sup> Prize went to Vanshika.\u00a0 Sponsored by SI Rugby\u00a0 Her chosen topic \u2013 Miracles do Happen.<\/span><\/h5>\n
3rd<\/sup> Prize was awarded to Tamanna Janjua sponsored by SI Solihull. \u00a0Her chosen Topic –\u00a0\u00a0 Human Trafficking – Modern Day Slavery.\u00a0 \u00a0How can we stop it?<\/span><\/h5>\n
A special achievement award was given to Daud Ahmed\u00a0 sponsored by SI Coventry<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n
All the candidates spoke most eloquently and were a joy to listen to.<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

Public Speaking Competition 2017<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Midland Arden Region’s\u00a015th Public Speaking Competition was <\/span>held at the prestigious\u00a0Birmingham Council Chamber on Saturday 25th March 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

To mark the 15th anniversary, we were honoured to have present Federation President Ann Hodgson,<\/span> Past International President Ann Garvie, Past Federation Presidents Ann Dawson, Jenny Vince, <\/span><\/span> Joan Smyth (who was present at our very 1st competition in 2003) and Su Roxburgh Midland Arden Region President.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eleven young people, girls, and boys aged 14-18 yrs from Non-Fee Paying Schools across the Midland Arden Region took part.<\/span><\/p>\n

1st prize of \u00a0\u00a3150 \u00a0plus the trophy went to Thomas Woodland<\/span><\/strong>, sponsored by SI Stratford upon Avon his chosen topic was “Have women’s rights gone too<\/strong> far”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2nd \u00a0prize of \u00a375 plus a trophy went to Jude Radley,\u00a0 sponsored by SI Leamington & Warwick, his chosen topic\u00a0was “Migration how open should our doors be”.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

3rd prize of \u00a325 plus a trophy was awarded to Daniel Harrison,<\/span> sponsored by SI Solihull & District. His chosen topic was <\/span>“What does Brexit mean to young people?”<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

All our contestants were given a \u00a325 book token from their sponsoring clubs.<\/span><\/p>\n
