Dame Vera Baird QC\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 – Victims Commissioner for England and Wales<\/strong><\/h4>\n

At our March meeting, Dame Vera gave feedback on our recent work on DA court observations.\u00a0 Our reports have now all been submitted, and the debrief by Police is due on 22nd June 2020.<\/p>\n

Soroptimists completed 200 questionnaires, representing 225 manhours worked.\u00a0\u00a0 Our region mustered 40 volunteers and carried out 70 observations.\u00a0 Other regions are now becoming involved in the project.<\/p>\n

Dame Vera then told us about developments in the Northumbria region.\u00a0 As Victims Commissioner, her aim is to put the victim centre stage in what is an adversarial criminal justice system.\u00a0 At present, the focus is on prosecuting or defending the defendant.<\/p>\n

Victims of violent crime are often deeply traumatised by their role as a witness, but neglected once the trial is over. \u00a0\u00a0Dame Vera sees her role as empowering victims to get the help they need.<\/p>\n

One method of achieving this is by signposting victims to the various agencies that can support them.\u00a0 \u00a0 Training Magistrates in DA awareness is also a vital part of making the legal process more victim-friendly.<\/p>\n

She then moved on to discuss Anti-Social Behaviour crimes. In this area, she is encouraging Local Authorities to enact Community Triggers to support victims.\u00a0 Community Triggers require agencies to review their responses to reported anti-social behaviour, in order to\u00a0assess whether their response was satisfactory.<\/p>\n

Dame Vera is optimistic that progress is being made, but she feels that more remains to be done.\u00a0 We Soroptimists will be central to delivering change in this area.<\/p>\n
