{"id":5063,"date":"2021-03-11T15:58:22","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T14:58:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/milton-keynes\/?p=5063"},"modified":"2021-03-11T16:05:37","modified_gmt":"2021-03-11T15:05:37","slug":"choosetochallenge-on-iwd-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/milton-keynes\/2021\/03\/11\/choosetochallenge-on-iwd-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"#ChoosetoChallenge on IWD 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>March celebrates International Women&#8217;s Day and this year our first Chair of Soroptimist International Milton Keynes Branch, Angie Novell and CEO of MK Snap (Milton Keynes Special Needs Achievement Project) wants us to #ChoosetoChallenge where disabled women are absent from discussions or recognition or side-lined by the language we hear.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/milton-keynes\/2021\/03\/11\/choosetochallenge-on-iwd-2021\/angie-novel-2021-iwd-event\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5064\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5064 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/milton-keynes\/files\/2021\/03\/Angie-Novel-2021-IWD-event-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Angie Novel 2021 IWD event\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/milton-keynes\/files\/2021\/03\/Angie-Novel-2021-IWD-event-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/milton-keynes\/files\/2021\/03\/Angie-Novel-2021-IWD-event.jpeg 531w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/hashtag\/?keywords=iwd2021&amp;highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A6774661310631182336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#IWD2021<\/a> I ask you to remember the contributions &amp; challenges faced by all women; but in particular those women that live with a disability. The unique lived experiences of disabled women are often lost in the discussions we hear, disregarded in the language we use &amp; missing from platforms for recognition. As one disabled friend said to me \u2018You try \u2018standing up for women\u2019 when you are sitting in a wheelchair!\u2019\u00a0\u00a0We must challenge perceptions. As a disabled woman; I was told at a checkout that I didn\u2019t \u2018look deaf\u2019 leading me to explain that some disabilities are not always \u2018visible\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>We can challenge stereotypes &amp; inequality but must listen to the lived experiences of disabled people to drive positive change.\u00a0 \u00a0I work with disabled people &amp; have seen the magic that happens when you start to \u2018believe\u2019 that someone can achieve their full potential. Belief in a persons \u2018potential\u2019 has the ability to manifest incredible transformation &amp; change. If you are one of the women I am referring to; chances are you have already had to fight the dual hurdles of disability &amp; gender inequality.
