On a pleasant Saturday afternoon in late September members of SI Morecambe and Heysham once again joined members of the Marine Conservation Society, local residents, and friends in the beach clean and survey of our “adopted” beach at Half Moon Bay, Heysham.
All the litter collected within a specified area of 300 metres was recorded on Marine Conservation Society lists then weighed and the results reported to the MCS. We found the beach to be relatively clean but the largest amount of rubbish was of small pieces of plastic and small food wrappers. Plastic in the sea is a major environmental problem.
The photograph below shows only some of the 18.5kg of litter collected in six bags but we had a satisfying time improving the beach and enjoyed a welcome drink at the café afterwards.
