A message from President Brenda
2014 sees us entering our 75th year as a club. Founded in September 1939, the year the 2nd World War broke out; we were chartered in a year that brought much heartbreak and disruption to everyone in the club.
During this time we worked together to support our community and seventy five years later we are still here – much changed – but still quietly working together within the community. Soroptimist International Morecambe & Heysham is primarily a service organisation committed to improving the lives and status of women and girls, these are our goals that we repeat at the start of each meeting and I am delighted and humbled at the thought of being part of the long roll call of so many women.
I have been a Soroptimist for nineteen years and this is my second time as our club President. It is a privileged position; I have always viewed it a little like being Head Girl, only scarier.
We have an exciting year ahead of us and working together with other Soroptimist clubs we will be able to look back and know that we made a small but significant contribution to change, one that continues to better the lives of women and girls.
On a personal note I belong to a large and increasing family, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild! The bird with me in the picture is ‘Alba’, a rescued barn owl raised by our grandson. We like owls in our family.
I also have the honour of being the founder and now Patron of P.I.E.S. Partners in Education Swaziland. In 1999 S.I. Morecambe & Heysham was the first Soroptimist club to support P.I.E.S. and we still do so; this year it is our chosen charity. If you would like more information on P.I.E.S. please follow this link www.piescharity.org.uk/ to the charity’s webpage.
If you are reading this and you are not a Soroptimist and would like to know more about us, please contact us on 07901 691 539 and I hope that you enjoy browsing our website.
Yours in friendship
