It usually causes no symptoms and clears on its own, but some types can lead to <strong>genital warts<\/strong> or, less commonly, <strong>cell changes that may develop into cancer<\/strong> over many years<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The HPV vaccine helps protect against human papillomavirus (HPV). They raised over \u00a31,000 for Northumbria Domestic Abuse Services<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I attended SI Darlington&#8217;s literary lunch at Headlam Hall where I heard how Frazer&#8217;s Fables is providing short stories with a moral for children of all ages. They provide characters and stories of courage and bravery, respect and responsibility, truth and honesty as well as determination and resilience. A delightful young couple trying to make a positive\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">difference to young people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Last Saturday I celebrated SI Newcastle Upon Tyne&#8217;s 88th. Charter Lunch at the Copthorne Hotel. The Guest Speaker was Susan Dungworth, Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner. Her topic was &#8220;Keeping Women and Girls Safe&#8221;. She talked about her ethos of education and preventative work across the Region. She was particularly interested in victim support, digital safety and women&#8217;s safety on Public Transport. Cockermouth &amp; District:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6473 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Every-Life-Matters-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Every-Life-Matters-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Every-Life-Matters.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/>Lindsay Edmiston presented the club work with \u201cEvery Life Matters\u201d which is a Cumbrian charity which serves those people affected by or at risk of suicide.\u00a0 The statistics for death by suicide are increasing and are currently more than 50% greater in Cumbria than the rest of England.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The charity creates and makes up small brown boxes that contain information leaflets about how to overcome suicidal thoughts and where to obtain further help plus such small items as a rubber band which affected people can wear to remind them that help is at hand.\u00a0 These boxes are given out and available through a network of distribution points.\u00a0\u00a0 The Club members had several active workshops to make up these boxes and their help was so gratefully received that the Charity has asked them to do some further work for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Darlington &amp; District:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Barbara Brown described their club project for International Women\u2019s Day.\u00a0\u00a0 They used this occasion to also celebrate the club\u2019s 75th Anniversary.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They purchased 75 roses in rainbow<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6476 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Roses-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Roses-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Roses.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/> colours and created tie on labels with a message about IWD and their 75th birthday as Soroptimists.\u00a0\u00a0 Club members then approached individual women in the town centre and presented them with a rose with the reason why they were doing this.\u00a0 They were in great demand and several men had to be refused when it was explained that they were honouring women on this special International Women\u2019s Day.\u00a0\u00a0 One was given to a working cleaner in the leisure centre who was overcome to be thought of someone special.\u00a0\u00a0 Club members agreed this was a very successful project to engage with women members of the public and agreed to repeat this next March and to try for sponsorship for the cost of the roses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Newcastle upon Tyne :<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Christine Tomkins presented their club project for International Women\u2019s Day which they re-titled \u201cReach for the Stars\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 This project took place at Cannington Street Primary School which is an inner city school where 28 languages are spoken.\u00a0 Last year, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6471 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Canning-Street-Reach-for-Stars-300x170.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Canning-Street-Reach-for-Stars-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Canning-Street-Reach-for-Stars.png 602w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>this similar project had engaged with only year 6 pupils and it had been very successful.\u00a0 This year, the teaching staff asked that the whole school could be included.\u00a0\u00a0 Every child was given the name of a woman who they had to research and then prepare a piece of work that explained why they were special women.\u00a0 They had a week to prepare their individual projects and the resulting work from the pupils included essays; pictures; poems and collages.\u00a0 Several winners were presented with a special certificate and every child received a \u2018celebration\u2019 chocolate.\u00a0 This exercise was of great value in a school where so many pupils come from cultural backgrounds that do not recognise the rights and contributions of women in their communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Penrith &amp; District :<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Pat Newsham described their club members\u2019 work in creating some of the 10,000 ceramic daffodils that were made in activity workshops by various groups.\u00a0 The aim was to display this mass of daffodils at the Lowther Estate and then sell them for a target<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6472 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/daffodil-s-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"156\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/daffodil-s-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/daffodil-s.jpg 306w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 156px) 100vw, 156px\" \/> of \u00a3300,000.\u00a0 This financial end result was to be divided between 5 local charities &#8211; \u201cAnother Weigh\u201d;\u00a0 \u201cUllswater Catchment Management Plan\u201d;\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cSunbeams\u2019;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cJames\u2019s Place\u201d;\u00a0 and\u00a0 \u201cNew Horizons Youth Club\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Pat showed pictures of members forming the ceramic shapes that resulted in the bright yellow daffodils and the \u2018planting\u2019 of them in the rural landscape to form a spectacular show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Tynemouth, Whitley Bay &amp; District:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Linda Johnson described how club members (from their \u2018Planet\u2019 sub group) had created a \u2018Bee\u00a0 Friendly Garden\u2019\u00a0 in\u00a0 St. Paul\u2019s Church garden in central Whitley Bay.\u00a0 A plot of land was agreed with the church and then cleared, and a raised bed edge created.\u00a0 This was filled with compost and plants that were attractive to honeybees.\u00a0 Local young people from the Sunday <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6470 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Bees-300x138.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Bees-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2023\/11\/Bees.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/>School also participated and the garden grew rapidly to form a focal point for people to visit, admire and count the Bee\u2019s!\u00a0\u00a0 Linda showed pictures of how the project had developed and how it looked in the full growth of the summer months.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A surprise for our members was the gift bags that all SINE attending members received as they left the meeting.\u00a0 This bag contained a list of the flowering plants and bulbs that flowered at different seasons of the year and would provide nectar for the Honey Bees, together with 3 crocus bulbs to plant.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Linda had a number of \u2018props\u2019 to illustrate her presentation including a beehive which was very colorful.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_separator][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;6457&#8243; It was a real privilege to have the Soroptimist International <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">President, Maureen Maguire, with us for the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"> After the AGM she spoke to us about the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">organisation and her International Presidents Appeal \u201cOpening Doors to a Bright Future\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The Appeal projects will follow the Soroptimist\u2019s commitment to Education by delivering <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">tangible benefits to the World\u2019s most marginalised women, girls and their communities. The <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">plan is to establish projects in each of the five Federations. Projects are already taking place <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">in Cambodia and Uganda with a third due to start in Georgia. Maureen, with several clubs also adding their contributions. Further donations can <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">be made via SIGBI Ltd with the funds clearly marked for the International President\u2019s Appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">In my previous message, I mentioned that we had a wonderful selection of Programme <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Action projects to review for the Regional Best Practice Awards. After much discussion by <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">the judging panel members, seven of these were short listed as being \u2018stand out projects\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">and chosen to give their presentations in the afternoon of Saturdays meeting. They were <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">most interesting and were a credit to our Region. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">In alphabetical club order, the presentations were:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I.Cockermouth and District: (PRFs 60674; 60680; 60681) which updated us all on the continuing <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">work the club has achieved with their \u2018Purple Ring Pull\u2019 campaign. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 They not only continue to collect and send out vast quantities of drink can ring pulls to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">be recycled into jewellery and other items, but they also :<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 arranged the provision of a Business Loan to enable families in the Philippines to set up <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">local small businesses to support their families independence. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 the final part of this project work involved members collecting large amounts of much <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">needed mother and baby products which were sent in a large bulk delivery (and were <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">safely received and put to immediate use just before the date of this presentation). <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I.Darlington and District: PRFs 59593; 59598 ( on the 16 days of activism &#8211; Orange the <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">World) and 59482; 59557; 59583; 59584; 59586; 59610; 60623 which were all about their <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">commitment to Advocacy which was well documented and covered widespread issues. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Their photographic account of the \u2018Orange the World\u2019 campaign was impressive with cafe\u2019s, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">shops, community centre\u2019s and the Town Council members (complete with the Town Crier) <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">all decorated in bright orange and actively promoting the message of \u2018say NO to Domestic <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">violence against women and girls\u2019. A truly orange event.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I. Newcastle upon Tyne: PRFs 59044; 59045; 59046; 59072; 60309; 60310; 60311; <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">60319; 60670; 60673; 60943 were all centred on work within the West End of Newcastle <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">upon Tyne in Elswick. This is one of the most economically deprived inner city areas in the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">UK and is a multicultural community with fragile food systems and unprecedented food <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">poverty. The project work involved : <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 supporting the West End Women and Girls Centre with their new 10 acre farm project <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">where a grant was obtained to start horticulture at the remote farm in all weathers under <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">a gigantic refurbished poly tunnel; <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 support for a primary school where the pupils have 40 first languages and the need to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">develop a Forest School was identified and the club paid for wet weather clothing for the <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">children; <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 International Women\u2019s Day activities where the pupils produced work on women who had <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">inspired them; <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 the unveiling of a \u2018blue\u2019 commemorative plaque to Dr Ruth Nicholson who was born in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Elswick and a First World War surgeon who, having been rejected by the British Army field <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">hospitals, joined an all woman field hospital in France where they had outstandingly high <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">rates of recovery and low levels of infections. A role model for the gender equality group <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">at the West End Women and Girls Centre &#8211; and addressed the inequality of women <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">commemorated by such plaques in the City.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 support for the West End Food Bank which is one of the busiest in the UK and not only <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">food was donated but funds to sponsor 300 people to have a hot 2 course Christmas meal <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">and 200 people to have packs of Hot Cross buns and Easter Eggs. 5 Microwave ovens <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">were donated to address concerns over fuel poverty.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I.Penrith and District: PRFs 59638; 60523; 60525; 60528; 60878 these projects were all <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">linked to the theme of climate change and involved :<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 The award of an RHS Gold Medal for their work on the Coronation Garden with its <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">wonderful explanation of Soroptimism. Later in top dressing the whole garden with peat <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">free compost, half of which was donated by the compost manufacturer.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 Tree planting in the Matterdale Flood Alleviation scheme.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 Foot path renewal in the Pattergill area<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 The Environmental theme at the Penrith\u2019s Queen\u2019s Jubilee celebrations where a stall was <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">very busy with information on climate change and activities for the children.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I. Stockton-on-Tees: PRFs 60727 and 60944 : Projects involved work with asylum <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">seekers through a former member who had been an asylum seeker herself. Collections of <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">clothing and household items were delivered to the community centre and financial <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">donations made to help meet the needs of these women. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I. Tynedale : PRFs 60336; 60470; 60598 all involved support for the Farm project being <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">developed by members of the West End Women and Girls Centre. The work involved:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 the planting of 125 trees to improve biodiversity and shelter to the boundary of the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">farm.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2022 the successful application for a Grant from the Greggs Community Fund to provide and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">improve facilities at this remote farm.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I. Tynemouth, Whitley Bay &amp; District: PRF 60281 which was a large scale project with <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">the towns of both Tynemouth and Whitley Bay in Toilet Twinning. Funds were raised and <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">communities involved and a very successful outcome of 40 toilets in 12 countries was <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">achieved. Each participant in this project received a certificate which is proudly on display <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">in the local toilets of the 2 towns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">and the winners were:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I.Newcastle upon Tyne received the Regional \u201cReach for the Skies\u2019 Award.\u00a0 Award accepted by Patricia Gatherum ( President Elect and Regional Rep. for S.I.Newcastle upon Tyne )<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I.Penrith &amp; District received the \u2018Connie Dawson Plate\u2019 for their climate change and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">sustainable themed projects. Award accepted by <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Pat Newsham of S.I.Penrith <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">and District. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I.P.
