include=&#8221;5930,5931,5929&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">To all my sister Soroptimists in Northern England\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">April 25th is the start of the World Health Organisation\u2019s\u00a0 World Immunisation Week.\u00a0 This subject of immunisation must be in everyone\u2019s minds at the moment,\u00a0 not only thinking about ourselves and whether we have had one or two jabs,\u00a0 but thinking of the people of countries\u00a0 where access to vaccines is sparse and fraught with difficulties &#8211;\u00a0 politically, logistically and economically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I wonder if there are any joint projects related to COVID-19 where Soroptimist clubs have worked together with their Friendship Link clubs to compare their comparative situations and help each other ?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Do let me know if you have news of any collaborative schemes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">To start this week\u2019s news on an upbeat note,\u00a0 I have received some lovely photographs from\u00a0 <strong>S.I.Tynemouth, Whitley Bay &amp; District <\/strong>who have been out and about in the sunshine in a socially distanced outdoor get together for 5 members on the seafront at Cullercoats.\u00a0\u00a0 Rosemary Webb is one of their club well-being advisers who does a great job at organising \u201cCatch-up and Cheer-up\u201d sessions.\u00a0 Each took their own folding chairs, coffee and\u00a0 suitable warm clothing for the chilly sea breezes.\u00a0 Linda Johnson went with a basket of fresh\u00a0 baked ginger scones\u00a0 which were delicious!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">We are reminded that our organisation thrives on friendship and a meet-up like this is so good for our well-being after such a cold and solitary winter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">News from <strong>S.I.Cockermouth &amp; District <\/strong>on a very interesting speaker from the <strong>Dianne Oxberry Trust.\u00a0 <\/strong>The Trust was set up following the death of Dianne Oxberry who was a well known TV presenter for the BBC North West &#8211;\u00a0 just 10 days after her diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer.\u00a0 Speakers Nicky Thompson and Sylvia Pearl gave information about the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer,\u00a0 which are somewhat vague &#8211;\u00a0 bloating, discomfort, loss of appetite, changes to bowel habits and painful sexual intercourse.\u00a0 They encouraged women to think about whether they have these symptoms and it was stressed that speed is of the essence with a 90% survival rate if diagnosed at a level 1\u00a0 but\u00a0 37% survival rate at later stages.\u00a0 The only way of getting a positive diagnosis is to push for a CA125 blood test and then an ultrasound as these are the only ways of confirming a diagnosis.\u00a0 Remind yourself that your own body awareness is important and what feels wrong for you.\u00a0 The aim of this talk was to raise awareness and members were asked to share the information with 3 others to create a network where everyone is aware of the symptoms and the need to push for a diagnosis.\u00a0 So thank you to President Claire Rawlinson for reminding us about the need for awareness of this condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"> For more information :\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dianneoxberrytrust.org\">https:\/\/dianneoxberrytrust.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TrustDianne\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/TrustDianne<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">If I may add a personal note and plea to this need for awareness of Ovarian Cancer symptoms.\u00a0\u00a0 Many Soroptimists in Northern England were involved in the \u201cUnited Kingdom Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening\u201d which ran from 2001 to 2005.\u00a0 The ovarian cancer centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead was the regional base for the research staff and volunteers involved in this extensive study. It was with great disappointment that we read of the outcome of the research in 2016 when the findings were not significant enough to warrant the recommendation that the NHS should\u00a0 establish a national screening programme for all adult women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>So please do remember &#8211;\u00a0 if you feel that something is wrong &#8211;\u00a0 then please do press for further medical investigations.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u2026. and now for something to make you smile from <strong>S.I. Cockermouth &amp; District\u00a0 <\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0 thank you for the bright and beautiful photographs of the crochet daffodils made for the Wordsworth celebrations in Cockermouth.\u00a0 President Claire Rawlinson and Ros Earthy made these as part of the Rotary Club project to decorate Cockermouth for April.\u00a0 This project commemorates the 251st birthday of William Wordsworth who was born on 7 April 1770.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I.Middlesbrough <\/strong>have been very busy again with the application for a grant via the Cleveland Police Fund where they received \u00a32,400 to fund 25 \u201cGrab Bags\u201d ( or \u201cNew Start Bags\u201d) for victims of modern day slavery along with 25 Tesco mobile phones each with a SIM card and \u00a310 for calls.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Members Margaret Clark and Kathy Warrick are seen in the attached photograph taken when delivering the results of their work to the Police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">S.I.Middlesbrough continue to receive good publicity in the local press ( week of 16 April 2021) with an article in the Darlington &amp; Stockton Times about member Susan Mansaray who is a charity worker and a refugee advocate from Sierra Leone.\u00a0 She outlines her reasons for becoming a journalist and how she now uses her skills to speak for women and girls who are silenced and suffering from abuse,\u00a0 often without the knowledge to make positive moves and escape to a better life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The book \u201cOverco<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5902 alignleft\" style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/05\/oVERCOMING-THE-ODDS-292x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/05\/oVERCOMING-THE-ODDS-292x300.png 292w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/05\/oVERCOMING-THE-ODDS.png 602w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 172px) 100vw, 172px\" \/><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">ming the Odds\u201d, available through Pam Cooper at S.I.Middlesbrough, is still being promoted.\u00a0 Pam tells me that it has now been sent as an electronic copy to Teesside University <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">where it can be used as an on-line resource.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/05\/ebook-Overcoming-the-Odds.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Link to Booklet<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"> Also through member to member contact,\u00a0 S.I.
