Warm greetings to all my sister Soroptimists in Northern England<\/span><\/h3>\n

I hope that you are all keeping cool, in the shade and looking after yourselves with <\/span>refreshing drinks ! <\/span>As always, we have some interesting and positive news to share.<\/span><\/p>\n

S.I. Carlisle report on the current situation that is affecting some services for frail and <\/span>elderly people in Carlisle. COVID guidance and restrictions have caused Age UK to close <\/span>and a lunch club, which was run entirely by volunteers (many of whom are Soroptimists ) , <\/span>has also closed. So Jess Sinclair tells me that she has been busying clearing out <\/span>cupboards which were full of Bingo prizes and activities, Scrabble, playing cards, <\/span>dominoes and games. These have now all been taken to the ladies Hostel in Water <\/span>Street where the resident ladies are being encouraged to start to socialise in their sitting <\/span>room. This is a great step forward for them having had to isolate in their rooms for a long <\/span>period, especially at a time when they are experiencing a great deal of trauma in their <\/span>lives. Jess also reports that club members have now delivered 109 toiletry bags which <\/span>has more than exceeded their 100 for 100 Challenge – thank you and well done Carlisle <\/span>members.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"S.I.Middlesbrough report that their members are prepared for the SIGBI Day of Action <\/span>on the Environment having extended an invitation to local Botanist, Anne Press, to address <\/span>their July meeting. Anne was an inspiring speaker who, after telling us a bit about her <\/span>work abroad , explained how the damage we have inflicted on our environment has <\/span>disrupted the fragile chemical balance of our connectivity with nature, which is threatening <\/span>the survival of a number of plant and animal species. Her key message was to encourage <\/span>young people to study botany and sustain biodiversity in order to protect the gene pool for <\/span>future generations. Anne illustrated her interesting talk by showing us samples of plants <\/span>and describing their importance in the ecosystem. She entertained us by reading a few <\/span>short, but topical poems ! Members may have read more about Anne Press in the <\/span>wonderful Lockdown project \u201cOvercoming the Odds\u201d book which S.I. Middlesbrough very <\/span>successfully produced and sold. <\/span>On the SIGBI Day of Action<\/span>
\nitself, members will be <\/span>calculating their carbon <\/span>footprints! Results of the UN <\/span>Carbon Footprint Survey will <\/span>be collated by Programme <\/span>Action Coordinator Margaret <\/span>Clark. <\/span>In addition, we hope that we <\/span>can make an impact with a <\/span>range of individual actions, <\/span>from avoiding plastic to <\/span>walking instead of using the <\/span>car, switching off unnecessary <\/span>appliances and having a meat free day. To this end, <\/span>members have shared some <\/span>imaginative recipes, and we\u2019ll <\/span>be munching mushrooms – not <\/span>meat ! <\/span>Thank you Middlesbrough <\/span>members for this timely <\/span>reminder of our Day of Action.<\/span><\/p>\n

All members are welcome to join us for an hour of friendship and <\/span>chat – no Agenda\u2019s ! – no minutes ! – just us keeping in touch with each other and <\/span>sharing stories. Now for some very happy news ! <\/span>I am taking this opportunity to wish our Past Regional President Shirley Hallam all the <\/span>very best wishes for Saturday 24 July when she will be getting married to Peter Gould. I<\/span>
\nhave received the following message from members of her club :-\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S.I. Tynemouth, Whitley Bay & District : <\/span>\u201cWe believe that Peter\u2019s earliest encounter with Soroptimists \u2018in action\u2019 was on the <\/span>Seafront outside Tynemouth Priory and Castle as members of our club gathered\"\" with other <\/span>local women\u2019s group to support the annual DIVA Walk along the coastline. This charming <\/span>man, walking hand in hand with Shirley, was immediately welcomed and absorbed into<\/span>
\nour extended community and he has continued to visibly support both Shirley and her <\/span>commitment to Soroptimism ever since. Fund raising special events; SIGBI Conference –\u00a0<\/span>Pe<\/span>ter remains engaged, interested and very present in our ongoing efforts to improve the <\/span>lives of women and girls. <\/span>We could not be happier for Shirley and Peter on the occasion of their marriage\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Shirley ( on the right ) with some of her club members on the DIVA walk.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now – there is more to this story\u2026\u2026.. on 22nd June 2021 S.I.Newcastle upon Tyne <\/span>inducted a new member – Mandy Coppin who is the Chief Executive Officer of<\/span>
\n\u201cSTREETWISE\u201d – which is a local charity providing a range of health and wellbeing <\/span>services to young people aged between 11 and 25 years old. Many of you may<\/span>
\nremember when Shirley was our Regional President in 2018-19, she chose <\/span>\u201cSTREETWISE\u201d as her regional charity ( together with \u2018Daft and as a Brush\u2019). <\/span>Shirley and Peter have decided to ask their friends and families not to give or send them <\/span>wedding gifts but if they so wish to please make a donation to \u201cSTREETWISE\u201d and so<\/span>
\ncontinue the interest and support that Soroptimists have given this much needed service <\/span>for local young people. Cheques and donations should be made out to \u201cStreetwise Young<\/span>
\nPeople\u2019s Projects\u201d and sent to :- <\/span>Shirley Hallam at 53 Davison Avenue, Whitley Bay NE26 3ST.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>We hope that Shirley and Peter have a wonderful day next Saturday and enjoy living the<\/span>
\nrest of their lives together .<\/span><\/p>\n

We also welcome Mandy Coppin as one of our newest members and hope that she enjoys <\/span>her membership with the fellowship and sense of purpose that it brings to us all. <\/span>Shirley ( centre in the red dress ) and Mandy Coppin (on her left in black) at the Carlisle <\/span>Regional Meeting (in March 2019 ) when Mandy Coppin inspired us with her personal <\/span>story of homelessness and her dedication to improve the lives of young people. We were <\/span>all wearing hats that day to mark Brain Tumour Research Day that S.I.Cockermouth was <\/span>supporting.<\/span><\/p>\n
