{"id":6079,"date":"2021-10-24T18:38:43","date_gmt":"2021-10-24T17:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/?p=6079"},"modified":"2021-10-24T18:38:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-24T17:38:43","slug":"presidents-message-number-67","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/2021\/10\/24\/presidents-message-number-67\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidents Message &#8211; Number 67"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">To all my sister\u00a0 Soroptimists in Northern England\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">As we head towards to end of the summer, I do hope that you have all begun to enjoy going out and about again even if cautiously when mixing with other people.\u00a0 Our gardens have certainly benefitted from recent rain, but not sure about the wind which has ruined my hollyhocks !<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">One of our major Federation Centennial projects has come to a close with the final few notable Soroptimists in the <strong>#whoisshe\u00a0 <\/strong>listings.\u00a0 As a region, I am sure that we were all thrilled to have 14 of our members show cased for their commitment to their professions<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6081 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/10\/01-AMY-KERRISON.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"198\" \/>AMY KERRISON, 1927-2014 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Amy Kerrison, a committed Soroptmist with 44 years\u2019 service in South Shields, died in 2014 aged 87.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">In 1955 Amy, as a QARANC army nurse, was serving in Hong Kong when she met her future husband, Roger.\u00a0 In 1958 they returned to England and were married.\u00a0 ANer having two children she returned to work, first as a Health Visitor, and then as a Lecturer in Child Health.\u00a0 Amy con3nued in that field throughout her working life, and in 1992 she was appointed Chairman of the local Community Health Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Amy joined S.I. South Shields in 1970, and throughout her 3me with the club she held various offices at Club, Region and Federa3on level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Amy soon became our Friendship Link Co-ordinator, proceeding to Programme Acton Officer and then Club President in 1985\/86.\u00a0 As Friendship Link Co-ordinator she made friends with Inglewood, California, and twice visited them.\u00a0 Whilst there she met our founder, Violet Richardson Ward.\u00a0 Amy also made a link with the Jaeran club in Norway, and joined them for their 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary in 1999.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">At Regional level Amy held the office of Programme Acton Officer and was Regional President in 1<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">985\/86.\u00a0 In April 1995, as co-ordinator for Project Five O, \u2018Women Co-operating Internationally in Development\u2019, Amy organised a Conference in Durham entitled \u201cFor Women in Development\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Attending were members of S.I. Northern Region and representa3ves of the Mother\u2019s Union, the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Association of Women Graduates, the Voluntary Organisation for the Equal Opportunities\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Commission, and the Social Welfare Research Unit of Newcastle University.\u00a0 Amy had an article about \u201cFive-O\u201d in \u201cCelebration Jubilee\u201d, a booklet produced for the Fiftieth anniversary of the Northern Region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">At National level Amy worked on the \u201cGlobal Voice for Women\u201d involving 124 countries worldwide.\u00a0 One of their projects was \u2018Limbs for Life\u2019 in Angola, Afghanistan and Georgia.\u00a0 In 1986 Amy represented SIGBI at a European Conference in Warsaw on \u201cChild Care and Child Health, Peace to Children\u201d and undertook exchange visits with the National Council of Women in Poland and Hungary.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">During the period 2003\/07 Amy was the Federa3on Programme Advisor for Economic and Social Development.\u00a0 Over that period, she a\/ended Interna3onal Conferences in Istanbul, Melbourne, Nohngham and Sheffield.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">In the publica3on \u201875 years of SIGBI &#8211; Memories of Members\u2019 there are two photographs of Amy with our founder President Violet Richardson-Ward and an ar3cle, by Amy, of her 3me with Sorop3mists and how things have changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">In later years, and when her health allowed, Amy still attended and contributed to the club and regional meetings.\u00a0 Amy will be remembered for her lifelong commitment to the ethos of Soroptimism, with respect and affection not only by her own club but by the wider Soroptimist community. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Amy\u2019s yellow and blue tie was heavy with her badges representing visits to, from the top,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Hawthorne, California; Inglewood; Hawaii; Instanbul; Melbourne; Nottngham, the Yorkshire Rose;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Club Past President and Northern Region Past President.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">and to Soroptimism.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Our last entry came on our screens in August and is\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Amy Kerrison from\u00a0 S.I. South Shields and District.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Amy joined Soroptimists in 1970 and served in many roles including being Club President in 1985\/86 and went on to be a Regional President and hold Federation posts.\u00a0\u00a0 She was one of our members who loved to travel and had actually visited California and met with our Founder Violet Richardson-Ward in 1977. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">In the Federation publication \u201cSoroptimist International GB &#8211; 75 Years of Memories of Members\u201d\u00a0 (2009 )\u00a0\u00a0 Amy herself is quoted as saying :\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cOver the past 39 years I have seen many changes in the role of women which was reflected in the variety of categories of membership.\u00a0 Not just in Health and Education but more members in executive roles in business.\u00a0 There was a change in Protocol &#8211;\u00a0 more relaxing !\u00a0 As Club and Regional President I remember having to wear formal evening dress with white gloves to shake hands with the Club Presidents .\u00a0 Many members wore hats at Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Civic Action became Programme Action, which covered not only local issues but worldwide ones.\u00a0 This was the area that interested me the most and led me to becoming the Programme Action Representative for my club, the Northern Region and Programme adviser for SIGBI which involved me in P.A. workshops at both Federation and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">International Conferences.\u00a0 In the Northern Region we also organised Five-O workshops with four other women\u2019s organisation \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I.South Shields &amp; District <\/strong>members have sent me some personal memories of Amy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Valerie Metcalf ( a member for 32 years ) :-\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cAmy was a formidable lady and I was nervous of her at first.\u00a0\u00a0 She had done so much in Soroptimism and was involved with Five-0.\u00a0\u00a0 It was through Five-0 that I got to know her better as I attended meetings with her.\u00a0 She corresponded regularly with our Norwegian Friendship Club, Jaeran, and I went with her to their 25th Anniversary Dinner where we had a lovely weekend.\u00a0\u00a0 I also enjoyed our times at Conference with her as she knew so many people.\u00a0 We were also in the same art club and she did some fine portraits of her family.\u00a0 She was always good company and is a miss to our club and to Soroptimism to which she gave so much\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Jean Cartner ( a member for 29 years )\u00a0\u00a0 :-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cAmy was a very enthusiastic Soroptimist, filling many roles.\u00a0 She was also a good story teller, in particular her friendship with a fellow Soroptimist in America whom she visited one or twice.\u00a0 She was a great source of information regarding Soroptimatters\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Ruth Richardson ( a member for 30 years ) tells a little story !\u00a0\u00a0 :-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cWe had a Friendship link with SI Gosport &amp; Fareham and as a member from SI South<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Shields had moved to Fareham and one of my daughters-in-law became a member there,\u00a0 Amy and I were invited to their Charter Dinner and weekend celebrations.\u00a0 I was asked to reply to the toast to the guests,\u00a0 however one lady said to me that they were so pleased to meet Amy as Gillian Harris was always quoting Amy and they really thought that perhaps they should have a cutout of her at their meetings !\u00a0 Amy took this in good part.\u00a0\u00a0 Whenever Amy attended Federation Conferences, she would disappear to meet up with members she knew at Federation level.\u00a0 She always had the latest gossip to impart back at the hotel !\u00a0 A very feisty lady \u201c.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Thank you to members of S.I.South Shields &amp; District for honouring such a wonderful member in Amy Kerrison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I.Newcastle upon Tyne <\/strong>have sent in an introductory report on their\u00a0 <strong>\u201cSchools Outdoor Projects\u201d\u00a0 <\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201c S.I. Newcastle wanted to support outdoor education projects as part of our commitment to climate change and working with communities to support young people.\u00a0 We see this as an ongoing project.We started by working with a Middle School who wanted to develop a Gardening Club.\u00a0 Their aim was to grow vegetables which could be used in the food technology lessons and any surplus would be sent to community projects.\u00a0 In doing so the students would learn about \u2018food to fork\u2019 and it would be an opportunity to learn about gardening methods, to work and plan collaboratively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6082\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/10\/02-SOUTH-SHIELDS-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"371\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/10\/02-SOUTH-SHIELDS-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/10\/02-SOUTH-SHIELDS.jpg 642w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/>The Assistant Head and students asked if we could provide them with funds for good quality tools, spades, forks and hand tools.\u00a0 The students did the research for the \u2018best buys\u2019 ,\u00a0 value for money and quality.\u00a0 The teacher approached the PFI company who agreed to provide a greenhouse and two raised beds.\u00a0 Club members donated some of their surplus gardening items.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">We visited a session of the Club at the end of term.\u00a0 So many of the students were interested that they have had to work in rotation.\u00a0 We were met by some very enthusiastic students and staff who showed us the vegetables, tomato plants, herbs they had been growing.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a learning curve for all of them.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">We will continue to support the school.\u00a0\u00a0 The teacher is going to offer support to our next school so possibly some collaborative work will be possible.\u00a0 His ambition is to develop an orchard over the next year.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">We have identified another school in a different part of Newcastle with different needs and aims and are excited about that.\u00a0\u00a0 So\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 watch this space for the next\u00a0 chapter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Pictured are the two large raised beds and the greenhouse at the site of the first School Gardening Club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Newcastle upon Tyne recently lost a much loved and long time member in Dorothy Sisterson. Dorothy worked in Education all her working life and had strong links to the schools in Newcastle City.\u00a0\u00a0 She asked that part of the collection taken at her funeral be\u00a0 used to support this <strong>\u201cSchools Outdoor Projects\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>and club members are very grateful for this generosity,\u00a0 both from Dorothy for remembering us and for those who donated. At Dorothy\u2019s\u00a0 funeral on 10th August,\u00a0 a poem was read that epitomises not only Dorothy\u2019s life but also perhaps our Soroptimist ideals :<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>\u201c At the close of life the question is &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not how much you have got, <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0But how much you have given.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Not how much you have won,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0But how much you have done.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Not how much you have saved,\u00a0 <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>\u00a0 But how much you have sacrificed.\u00a0 <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>\u00a0Not how much you were honoured,\u00a0 <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>\u00a0 But how much you have loved and served.\u00a0 \u201c <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Penrith &amp; District\u00a0 <\/strong>have sent in news of their progress on the Coronation Garden in central Penrith which is an on going project.\u00a0 They were asked to do as much work as possible in readiness for the judging of the Penrith in Cumbria in Bloom.\u00a0 There were two separate judging days for the \u201cIn Bloom\u201d competition,\u00a0 first for \u201cYour Neighbourhood\u201d section and secondly in the town of Penrith as a whole.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u00a0The judges in the \u201cYour Neighbourhood\u201d section asked a lot of questions and they appeared to be very impressed with our message about what Soroptimists do.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">You can see from these photographs with the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6084 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/10\/04-PENRITH-2-300x107.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/10\/04-PENRITH-2-300x107.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2021\/10\/04-PENRITH-2.jpg 642w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/>Cairn, Centre post\u00a0 with its top emblem and finger posts, it gets our message across to the public very clearly.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Very well done Penrith members and we look forward to hearing the results of the judges decisions. May you continue \u201cBlooming\u201d\u00a0 !!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Associate member Carol Rudd <\/strong>organised a coffee morning, the proceeds of which were for Shirley Hallam\u2019s chosen wedding charity \u201cStreetwise\u201d.\u00a0 Four members of S.I.Penrith\u00a0 &amp;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">District joined the event with three of our Associate members and their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Soroptimisters.
