{"id":6175,"date":"2022-02-15T00:12:39","date_gmt":"2022-02-14T23:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/?p=6175"},"modified":"2022-02-15T01:07:32","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T00:07:32","slug":"presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-76","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/2022\/02\/15\/presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-76\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidents Message and Newsletter &#8211; Number 76"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>REGIONAL\u00a0 PRESIDENT PAM\u2019S MESSAGE : <\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Good Morning Sister Soroptimists,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I do hope you have recovered from any storm damage and loss of power caused by Storm<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Arwen and to a lesser extent Storm Barra.\u00a0 Although I had an enjoyable Christmas Lunch on Tuesday with a group of friends the short walk back to the car was quite a challenge &#8211;\u00a0 Storm Barra had blown up during our lunch!\u00a0 However, we all managed to get back safely so hopefully you kept safe.\u00a0 Unfortunately, other parts of the world have been suffering with the unusual weather conditions too.\u00a0 In America the severe tornadoes have caused havoc resulting in at least 200 deaths and a great deal of structural damage.\u00a0 Again it makes us think about what we can do to prevent these extreme climate changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">After being so impressed by the work of the West End Women and Girls Centre when Huffty gave her presentation at our Regional Council Meeting (RCM) I decided, as well as other Soroptimists from the Region,\u00a0 I would like to support them at their AGM.\u00a0 On 10th December, I enjoyed \u201cmeeting\u201d members of staff,\u00a0 the Board of Directors and other volunteers who are all committed to the development of the Centre and the community. Although Huffty had given an excellent \u2018flavour\u2019 of the inspirational projects in which she is involved at our RCM,\u00a0 the AGM gave further details.\u00a0 It was interesting to hear about plans for 2022 such as the 40th anniversary celebrations which should have been held this year, the small holding to be developed in Northumberland and the women\u2019s library being built by women at the Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I am delighted to hear that a number of clubs were impressed by the work undertaken by Huffty and her team and have already allocated funds to donate money for the planting of trees at their small holding in Northumberland.\u00a0 Hopefully there may be there other ways for the Region to support the Centre thereby improving the lives of women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">A couple of weeks ago I came across The Richard Dimbleby Lecture which was most interesting and fitted in with my theme of exceptional women.\u00a0 It was delivered by Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert,\u00a0 Professor of Vaccinology, Jenner Institute and Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, Oxford University.\u00a0 The lecture \u201cVaccine vs the Virus :\u00a0 This race, and the next one\u201d,\u00a0 and outlined the development of the current pandemic and the vaccine to overcome the disease COVID-19.\u00a0 The importance of researchers working together highlighted how it was possible to produce a new vaccine so quickly however the challenges that had to be faced were stressed.\u00a0 On of these challenges was lack of funding and explained how scientists are spending undue amounts of time searching for funding sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Professor Gilbert explained that investment is needed in vaccine manufacture, particularly in Africa, to ensure it has its own modern manufacturing capabilities producing its own supply of vaccines.\u00a0 She also stated that \u201cjust as we invest in armed forces\u2026\u2026.. to defend against wars,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 we must invest in people\u2026\u2026.. to defend against pandemics.\u201d\u00a0 For those interested it is worth reading her lecture which is readable and puts the pandemic into perspective with the future pandemics.\u00a0 ( Lecture is available via the BBC\u2019s iPlayer or simply google the Richard Dimbleby Lecture.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">To finish,\u00a0 I hope you are all well prepared for Christmas and have a wonderful time with your family and friends over the Festive Season.\u00a0 I also send you all good wishes for 2022 and look forward to contacting you again in our next NewsleTTer on 9th January. Stockton-on-Tees <\/strong>reported that they delivered a huge collection of items to Stockton and Billingham Food Bank.\u00a0 For many reasons the demand on food banks is increasing and the club collected together food, toiletries, sanitary products, bedding and clothing. Club member Julie Everson and husband handed the goods over to a grateful and appreciative manager Helen Winspear who<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6170 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture3-251x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture3-251x300.png 251w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture3.png 502w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/> was also very interested to learn about the work of Soroptimists in the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Middlesbrough\u00a0 <\/strong>have worked alongside the <strong>Bungalow Project\u00a0 <\/strong>for a number of years providing treats for the families at Easter and Christmas,\u00a0 \u00a0Knitted teddies for the children and general support for the work of the organisation.\u00a0\u00a0 Their latest contribution in preparation for the festive season includes the usual goodies, plus colouring books and crayons for the children.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6171 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture4-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture4-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture4.png 602w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The Director and one of the original founders,\u00a0 Marie Blythe was recently featured in the Darlington and Stockton Times in an article which hi-lighted her dedication to children whose emotional well being had been impacted by poverty, sexual abuse and domestic violence.\u00a0 Marie\u2019s work includes using play and the language of children in order to explore the difficulties in their lives.\u00a0\u00a0 She says \u201c You try to see the world through their eyes \u2026. you try to gain their trust &#8211;\u00a0 we are not the experts,\u00a0 the child is\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Marie\u2019s current project involves working alongside Redcar &amp; Cleveland Council to support kinship carers,\u00a0 who are usually grandparents who look after their own grandchildren in situations when they have to be removed from their own parents.\u00a0 The project provides wrap-around care for these families.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Marie\u2019s colleagues say that she is selfless in her advocacy for these children and an inspiration to those around her.\u00a0\u00a0 Members of S.I. Middlesbrough definitely agree !<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Newcastle upon Tyne\u00a0 <\/strong>have been very busy preparing for the festive time.\u00a0 A long running project each Christmas has been to provide 25 gift bags for homeless women who use the Joseph Cowen Healthcare Centre in Byker.\u00a0 This is the only access to primary health care that is open to homeless people in the City.\u00a0 The Centre also provides bathroom and shower facilities, a washing machine for personal clothing and staff include a psychiatric nurse and access to GP appointments.\u00a0 The bags contained shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, radox bath, sponge,\u00a0 deodorant, hand sanitiser,\u00a0 a selection box, a warm hat, tissues, hot drinks pack, biscuits and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">one of Patricia\u2019s Angels !<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u00a0Each bag had a hand written gift tag with warm greetings from Newcastle Soroptimists.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6172 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture5-254x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture5-254x300.png 254w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture5.png 509w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">This photograph below shows the bags ready for delivery to the Centre with President Christine Tomkins (seated on left);\u00a0 club secretary Cris Young (standing) and Lesley Bowes with a furry friend !<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Other gifts that the club has made this year include a \u00a3500 donation to the West End Food Bank which will sponsor 100 hot Christmas Dinners for those most in need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I.\u00a0 Newcastle upon Tyne<\/strong> has also been supporting the Canning\u00a0 Street Primary School in the west end of Newcastle as they are developing a Forest School for their pupils.\u00a0 One of their requests has been for funding for waterproof clothing for the children so that they can enjoy the outdoor learning experiences.\u00a0 The club was able to donate \u00a3350 to the school for the purchase of new waterproofs of suitable sizes for the children.\u00a0\u00a0 To add to this <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6173 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture6-234x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture6-234x300.png 234w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture6.png 468w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 171px) 100vw, 171px\" \/>donation, several members have been on the lookout for suitable boots and warm outdoor clothing as they visit charity shops.\u00a0 The school has a high number of children who are from refugee families where English is not their first language.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The photograph below is of some the boots ready to be delivered.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Carlisle\u00a0 <\/strong>have continued to help the ladies living in the hostel at Water Street.\u00a0\u00a0 The latest delivery to them was a collection of long life foods, 6 sets of casual wear,\u00a0 3 pairs of slippers and 6 pairs of slipper socks.\u00a0 Sharon Rhodes who runs the hostel visited a recent club meeting with her husband Peter who runs the mens hostel in Carlisle.\u00a0 At this meeting,\u00a0 a variety of presents to help fill the Christmas Boxes will be handed over so that each resident will have their own Christmas giN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Durham\u00a0 <\/strong>reports that they too have been preparing for Christmas treats for people in need.\u00a0 Each of their 5 P Groups (Peace,\u00a0 Partnership, Prosperity.
