{"id":6193,"date":"2022-02-15T00:34:40","date_gmt":"2022-02-14T23:34:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/?p=6193"},"modified":"2022-02-15T00:34:40","modified_gmt":"2022-02-14T23:34:40","slug":"presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-77","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/2022\/02\/15\/presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-77\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidents Message and Newsletter &#8211; Number 77"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">REGIONAL PRESIDENT PAM\u2019S MESSAGE :<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Good Morning Sister Soroptimists,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">It\u2019s hard to believe that since our last Newsletter that Christmas and New Year are over, however I do hope you all had a wonderful Festive Season with your family and friends.\u00a0 I always think it is sad taking the decorations down as the house looks quite bare, but I do enjoy spending some time looking through the Christmas cards I have received and catching up on news often from people I haven\u2019t seen for some time.\u00a0 It is wonderful to hear from ex-colleagues, past students, from friends who have moved to different arras in the country as well as from current, kind, and supportive friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I am always amazed at the range of a6ractive and interesting designs, particularly those from friends who have the skills to make their own cards which are always very special.\u00a0 It is also good to see that the majority of the cards support a wide range of charities so are going to help a worthwhile cause.\u00a0 Whilst I do appreciate and enjoy receiving all my cards, I did receive a very special one this year which as more like a booklet than a card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">This Christmas booklet entitled \u201cThe Meal that was Two Thousand Years in the Making\u201d\u00a0 is about the origins and traditions surrounding our Christmas dinners and Christmas foods around the world.\u00a0 It begins with an introduction about Isabella Beaton and her book on Household Management, published in 1861 which sold more than two million copies in the first two years.\u00a0 The book gave all sorts of advice but it was the recipes and coloured engravings, many of which are reproduced in the booklet, that made her so well known. She was only 25 years old when she wrote the book with much of her knowledge based on her being the eldest of 20 siblings!\u00a0 During the severe winter of 1858 she opened a Soup Kitchen in her own home for the poor children in Pinner where she lived &#8211;\u00a0 another of my Excellent Women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The rest of the Christmas booklet gives fascinating descriptions of the traditional foods eaten in the U.K. and other countries worldwide such as Poland, Mexico, Iceland, Lithuania, India, China and Iraq.\u00a0 It emphasises the importance that sharing food can make such as communal Christmas Dinners and Christmas foods to bring people together from different countries.\u00a0 This card goes towards supporting the work of Justice First whose values are to welcome, understand and support those seeking asylum from far off countries and finishes by saying \u201c<em>Christmas is truly a -me for sharing in whatever ways we can\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>I\u2019m sure that we would all agree with this sentiment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">You may remember that in October we had two special events\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 Soroptimist International\u2019s 100th Birthday and the SIGBI Llandudno Conference.\u00a0 Our S.I. President Elect at the time,\u00a0 Maureen Maguire,\u00a0 spoke on both occasions about her Appeal \u201cOpening Doors to a Brighter Future\u201d.\u00a0 On 1st January 2022 Maureen took up her role as our S.I. President for the next two years.\u00a0 As a member of SI Portadown, she is the first SI President from Northern Ireland and will be seeking support for her Appeal.\u00a0 The key objective of her Appeal is to provide education and training for all disadvantaged and marginalised women and girls.\u00a0 Following on from my theme for the year, \u00a0Maureen is also an Excellent Woman for her commitment to Soroptimism and for her great achievements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I send you all good wishes for 2022 and look forward to seeing you again in the coming year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 21px\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif\">Take care and look after yourselves Best wishes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 President Pam <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-size: 16px\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Newsletter<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I start this Newsletter with congratulations to <strong>S.I.Durham,\u00a0 S.I.Newcastle upon Tyne and \u2018Streetwise\u2019\u00a0 <\/strong>with the wonderful and colourful photograph which appeared at the top of the back page of the December \u2018Soroptimist News\u2019 where a collection\u00a0 of\u00a0 SIGBI Club\u2019s photographs depicted the 16 Days of Activism .\u00a0\u00a0 If you haven\u2019t read this latest e-magazine &#8211; then please do and remember to continue submitting your photographs for SIGBI to use to raise our profile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">In this edition of the Regional Newsletter,\u00a0 we have two reports of very different club activities which reflect on our diverse project work\u00a0 Internationally and within the U.K.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District <\/strong>have worked hard with partners to achieve the inclusion of Whitley Bay as a <strong>Toilet Twinned Town. <\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This theme was chosen by Immediate Past Club President Louise Bower who launched it with a \u2018Blue Loo Raffle\u2019.\u00a0 The prizes were a blue toiletries hamper and a chocolate hamper.\u00a0 With the funds raised,\u00a0 the club started by buying a latrine block in Tanzania.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">To get this <strong>Toilet Twinned Town <\/strong>award, a town has to have at least 20 toilets twinned and this has to include at least four from these six categories :<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Church or other faith community.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">School of other educational establishment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Public toilets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Cafe, pubs or restaurants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Local businesses or employers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Community organisations\/charities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">So from one latrine block the project started to grown.\u00a0 To twin a toilet it costs \u00a360 and you receive a certificate to say where your toilet is twinned.\u00a0 The club donated a twinned toilet to Newcastle Building Society,\u00a0 a cafe twinned their toilet and then four club members twinned their toilets.\u00a0\u00a0 So the club was well on the way to getting Whitley Bay a Toilet Twinned Town status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6187 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture1-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture1-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture1-2.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>They got in touch with St Pauls Church in the town centre and they were keen to raise the funds to twin their toilets.\u00a0 The parishioners raised enough to buy a latrine block comprising of three toilets &#8211;\u00a0 also two taps to go in it.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Next on the list was to get a school interested and this came about by talking to one of the parishioners who is a governor at Rockcliffe First School and they donated money to buy two toilets and the club donated another one so that all the school toilets are now twinned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">There was only the need for a public toilet to be twinned so on Saturday 20th November (\u00a0 the day after World Toilet Day !)\u00a0 club members Karen Lapworth (on the right) and Linda Johnson (on the left ) presented Sandra Graham ( centre)\u00a0 from North Tyneside Council with the certificate to twin the ladies public toilets beside the Rendezvous Cafe on The Links promenade.\u00a0\u00a0 See the photograph above.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">( Editor &#8211;\u00a0 if some of you members, while out walking along the Whitley Bay prom,\u00a0 ever visit these ladies loos next to the popular Rendezvous Cafe then you may recognise the venue as one of the popular filming sets for the \u2018Vera\u2019 TV series\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 the cafe I mean &#8211; not the loos!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The Joint Club Presidents Anne Gunning (on the left )\u00a0 and Sue McSharry ( on the right ) presented\u00a0 Norma Redfern, the Elected Mayor of North Tyneside,\u00a0 with the Twinned Town Certificate.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6188 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture2-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture2-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture2-2.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The photograph above shows the club members with representatives of their partner organisations on a lovely sunny morning.\u00a0\u00a0 This project was truly international with toilets being provided and twinned in not only Tanzania but also Nepal, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda,\u00a0 Ivory Coast and Zambia.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">(\u00a0 Editor:\u00a0 for further information on Toilet Twinning &#8211;\u00a0 see : <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toilettwinning.org\/\"><strong>www.toile6winning.org<\/strong><\/a> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0 is this something that other clubs could consider for their next club year plans ?\u00a0\u00a0 )<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I.Durham\u00a0 <\/strong>have sent me a report about one of their 100 for 100 challenges &#8211; <strong>Walking 100 Km for Endometriosis along the <u>Northern Saints Trails of Life and Love.<\/u> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cFollowing the success of fundraising for Bright Red last year using the Just Giving page, S.I.Durham decided repeat the use of Just Giving and fundraise for Endometriosis UK by walking 100 Km,\u00a0 which also supported the S.I. Centenary focus.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joint Presidents Sue Percival and Geraldine Hudson chose to walk two of the Northern Saints Trails,\u00a0 The Way of Life ( Gainford to Durham)\u00a0 and the The Way of Love ( Durham to Hartlepool)\u00a0 which together amounted to just over 100 Km.\u00a0\u00a0 Each of the trails is divided into 4 sections,\u00a0 so 8 in total.\u00a0 Sue and Geraldine completed\u00a0 the 10ti.19 Km in 4 weeks and were joined by Vyvyenne Mack and Janet Ha2le on some of the trails and Alison Lacey helped with some chauffeuring to some of the starts.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Following are some of the extracts from the diary :<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Saturday 13th November :\u00a0 <\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0 what a lovely day for the first leg of our Northern Saints Walk of Life from Gainford to West Auckland.\u00a0 We walked 14.28 Km on some beautiful tracks and through several pre2y villages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Saturday 20th November\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 <\/strong>Blessed with another beautiful warm and sunny day we covered 14.96 Km from West Auckland to Bishop Auckland.\u00a0 There were a few tricky paths to negotiate and deciphering the route directions was challenging at times !\u00a0 Still lots of autumn colours and the stretch along the River Wear, where we saw a kingfisher and a heron, was looking beautiful. \u00a0We also passed Escomb Church,\u00a0 the oldest and most complete Saxon church in England.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6189 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture3-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture3-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture3-2.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6190 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture4-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture4-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture4-2.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The photograph shows Geraldine Hudson ( le\u2018) and Sue Percival (right)\u00a0 at the start of the 3rd leg from Bishop Auckland to Tudhoe .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Tuesday 23rd November\u00a0 &#8211; \u00a0<\/strong>another lovely day, although a lot colder.\u00a0 The walk went from Bishop Auckland Castle through the Park and then along the Auckland Way.\u00a0 After trudging through a very muddy field we had to find an alternative route around Whitworth Hall as it was closed. \u00a0All good though as we got back to the allotted Northern Saints route around Spennymoor and then through woods to our finish in Tudhoe Village having walked 12.92 Km.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Tuesday 30th November\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 <\/strong>The walk today was from Tudhoe to Durham.\u00a0 We covered 13 Km and felt very pleased with ourselves,\u00a0 as instead of taking an alternative route towards the end of the walk,\u00a0 we climbed the 224 Steps of Doom to the top of Mount Joy and soon after we were rewarded with a wonderful view of Durham Cathedral.\u00a0 So ends our first Northern Saints Trail of Life and we are now half way through our challenge to cover 100 Km !<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Saturday 4th December\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 <\/strong>We set off from Durham on the first section of The Way of Love. The weather was mixed with several showers,\u00a0 but we also had some sunshine.\u00a0 We discovered some new footpaths, which neither of us had trodden on before,\u00a0 but we also found mud, lots of it !\u00a0 Our total walk today was 15.4 Km.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Wednesday 8th December &#8211;\u00a0 <\/strong>a shorter walk today,\u00a0 8.8 Km.\u00a0 We set off in heavy rain from Kelloe and followed two lovely mineral lines.\u00a0 Lucky for us the rain eased up and we even saw some blue sky and sunshine as we approached our finishing point in Trimdon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Friday 10th December\u00a0 &#8211; \u00a0<\/strong>We had a sunny day for our longest walk so far of 1ti.8ti Km from Trimdon to Hart.\u00a0 Another lovely varied walk with long stretches along former mineral lines and beautiful if not challenging routes,\u00a0 due to the sodden ground and fallen trees, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6191 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture5-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture5-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/02\/Picture5-2.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/> through Hesledon and Nesbit Denes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Wednesday 15th December &#8211;\u00a0 <\/strong>The final section of the Northern Saints Trail for the Way of Love was from Hart to Hartlepool Headland,\u00a0 following some of the coastal footpath.\u00a0 We covered 9.96 Km making our total of 10ti.19 Km.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The photograph\u00a0 shows (left to right)\u00a0 Vyvyenne Mack, Geraldine Hudson,\u00a0 Janet Ha2le and Sue Percival\u00a0 outside St Hilda\u2019s Church on Hartlepool Headland\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 at the very end of this 100+ Km walk. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The full story can be read on the Just Giving page :\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/fundraising\/Susan-Percival3?\"><strong>h6ps:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/fundraising\/Susan-Percival3?<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">utm_campaign=lc_frp_share_transaction_fundraiser_page_lunchedtiutm_content=1fdtitibc 4-66ba-4af2-9ec9-1e260362edc8tiutm_medium=emailtiutm_source=postofficetiutm_term =1634662496525\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>To date S.I.
