{"id":6286,"date":"2022-08-20T12:58:24","date_gmt":"2022-08-20T11:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/?p=6286"},"modified":"2022-08-20T12:58:24","modified_gmt":"2022-08-20T11:58:24","slug":"presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-81","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/2022\/08\/20\/presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-81\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidents Message and Newsletter Number 81"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>MESSAGE FROM REGIONAL PRESIDENT PAM\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>\u201cGood Morning Sister Soroptimists, <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">It\u2019s been an eventful couple of weeks since my last message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">My move back to Morpeth was finally completed on 17th February.\u00a0 Although I am sorry to leave Edinburgh and friends it is a relief to be settled in one place and I plan to visit Edinburgh quite regularly.\u00a0 In fact I was there on Friday to meet friends for lunch.\u00a0 All I have to do now is sort out the pile of boxes which are stacked away in a storage unit ! Many thanks to Christine, JIPP and Editor; for her best wishes on behalf of members for my life back in Morpeth as expressed in the previous Newsletter.\u00a0 They were greatly appreciated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">A major concern to us all is the plight of the people of Ukraine.\u00a0 As usual,\u00a0 I am sure Soroptimists across the Region will try to do what they can to relieve their situation if possible or at least give support to surrounding countries who are assisting the many refugees.\u00a0 The UN claims that over one million\u00a0 Ukrainians have lea their country.\u00a0 It is heart breaking to see the women and children being taken from the male members of their families to seek refuge in a strange country not knowing whether they will see them again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">On a lighter note,\u00a0 I was looking forward to joining SI Penrith &amp; District\u2019s Zoom meeting on Monday 21st February.\u00a0 Despite being all ready,\u00a0 even with my chain on, I wasn\u2019t able to connect to their meeting and I also had problems with my phone so I was very sorry that we had to give it up as a bad job.\u00a0 However I do hope I will be able to link up with their members at another meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">A number of us from the Region enjoyed a very pleasant Sunday afternoon celebrating SI Tynemouth, Whitley Bay &amp; District\u2019s 75th birthday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6279 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8101-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8101-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8101.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/> The event was perfect in every way &#8211; a wonderful Afternoon Tea,\u00a0 local singers providing entertainment at the beginning and end,\u00a0 a superb location made be6er by the bright sunny day looking onto to the clear sea and magnificent view of St Mary\u2019s Lighthouse and a most interesting talk about the North Shields Heritology Project.\u00a0 This project aims to bring the rich heritage of the Fish Quay (1850 to 1980 ) to life using new<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Technology,\u00a0 hence the trademark term \u2018Heritology\u2019\u00a0 (\u00a0 see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritology.com\/\">www.heritology.com<\/a> )<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">On Saturday,\u00a0 the day before the birthday celebrations,\u00a0 I attended a SIGBI Zoom meeting for Regional Presidents which was chaired by SIGBI President Cathy Corbridge.\u00a0 We had an interesting discussion,\u00a0 mainly about the recruitment and retention of members\u00a0 and Cathy explained some of the plans the Board had for the future and raising SIGBI\u2019s profile. The session was valuable as a means of exchanging ideas and hearing what other Regions were doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Although it seems a long time ago,\u00a0 another eventful occasion was the end of the Winter Olympic Games on 20th February.\u00a0 After the men\u2019s curling team won a silver medal it was a wonderful achievement by the women\u2019s team when they beat Japan 10 &#8211; 3 to win a gold medal.\u00a0 Eve Muirhead, the Captain, and her team members Vicky Wright, Jan Dodds and Hailey Duff are four more exceptional women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I\u2019m sure there will be many more exceptional women during the Paralympics Winter<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Games from 4th to 13th March so I look forward to Friday when the games begin. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Take care and look after yourselves<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Best wishes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 :\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 President\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>PAM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>EDITOR\u00a0\u00a0 :\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thank you President Pam for these thoughts.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>Members might like to see the updated posts on the SIGBI website under \u2018news\u2019 where the SIGBI Emergency Relief Fund has recorded its donation of \u00a35,000 to the British Red Cross Ukrainian Appeal to help the refugees who are fleeing the armed conflict and those remaining in the Ukraine.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 PLUS a further \u00a31,000 to S.I. of Europe\u2019s Disaster Relief Fund.\u00a0 There is a list of links to various Appeals\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 including the UK\u2019s Disasters Emergency Committee at\u00a0 <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dec.org.uk\/appeal\/ukraine-humanitarian-appeal\"><em>www.dec.org.uk\/appeal\/ukraine-humanitarian-appeal<\/em><\/a> <em>\u00a0\u00a0and this is currently match funded by the UK Government. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Newsletter<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Now we move on to more celebratory news and the report on the\u00a0 <strong><u>75th Anniversary of\u00a0 S.I. Tynemouth, Whitley Bay &amp; District\u00a0 club.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cOn the afternoon of Sunday 27th February 2022,\u00a0 our club held an Afternoon Tea event in the St Mary\u2019s Suite at Spanish City, Whitley Bay.\u00a0 Members from across the region and families and friends,\u00a0 95 in total,\u00a0\u00a0 were greeted with a repertoire of Geordie music and songs from ukulele band \u2018The Singing Hinnies\u2019,\u00a0 three players from the larger Bay ukulele group. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6280 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8102-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8102-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8102.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"> \u00a0This set the tone for what truly became a much needed celebration to raise our spirits in the aftermath of the pandemic and in the face of continued hardship across the nation and shocking events across the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Displays and leaflets showed the Club\u2019s history and Programme Action over the years and what we\u2019re doing right now to keep on delivering :\u00a0 twinning toilets,\u00a0 supporting women and children fleeing violence,\u00a0 bringing people together, being good neighbours and friends, and,\u00a0 helping communities to care for some of the most vulnerable both here and overseas who find it hard to have their voices heard.\u00a0 We\u2019ve come a long way in those 75 years but we know there is still much to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6281 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8103-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8103-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8103.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/>Each table was decorated with a stunning lighthouse and flower arrangements crafted by club member Linda Johnson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Gifts for each guest were a box of chocolate pistachio fudge made by Joint President Anne and a bookmark portraying a photograph of St Mary\u2019s Lighthouse,\u00a0 taken when lit orange during the 16 Days of Activism,\u00a0 taken by Pat Jefferson\u2019s husband Tim and printed by Newcastle Building Society.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Joint Presidents Anne and Sue welcomed guests and gave a brief history of the club before the delicious afternoon tea was served while Whitley Bay sparkled in glorious Spring sunshine.\u00a0 We enjoyed friendship and conversation,\u00a0 sharing our experiences as Soroptimists and sisters,\u00a0 reminding ourselves of why we do what we do.\u00a0 It was a room filled with people who understand the importance of not sitting back in the face of need but of stepping up to the plate and doing whatever we can,\u00a0 however small that action might be, to make a difference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Our fabulous guest speakers came from the North Shields Heritology Project,\u00a0 a project that works with young people to help them celebrate their local history and identities and build the skills in storytelling through technology.\u00a0 The anti-slavery movement and abolitionism had thrived in North Shields in the 1800\u2019s.\u00a0 They reminded us that it had been two Quaker women from Newcastle who had bought the freedom of slave Frederick Douglass.\u00a0 He became the most famous black man of his time,\u00a0 a great friend to Abraham Lincoln and a leader of the movement,\u00a0 coming several Rmes to speak in this area.\u00a0 One of the project\u2019s volunteers movingly shared the words of a pupil they had worked with while making their documentary about Douglass\u2019s life :\u00a0 \u201c<em>But this was years ago.\u00a0 Why are we still talking about slavery now ?\u00a0 \u201c\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>Why indeed ?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6282 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8104-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8104-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8104.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 178px) 100vw, 178px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The event ended with three moving songs performed by Enigma Choir,\u00a0 a small group who belong to the larger Tyneside A Capella choir.\u00a0 Their song themes,\u00a0 particularly \u2018lean on me\u2019 reminded us that,\u00a0 as Soroptimists, \u00a0we can support women and girls and communities in need as well as each other &#8211;\u00a0 together we are better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6283\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8105-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Closing remarks from Joint Presidents Anne and Sue included grateful thanks to everyone who participated in this uplifting event\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 musicians,\u00a0 speakers,\u00a0 choir,\u00a0 guests,\u00a0 members and organisers,\u00a0 as well as special guests Regional President Pam Turner and Elected Mayor for North Tyneside, Norma Redfearn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Norma is a keen supporter of our club and ended the event with these final remarks : \u201c<em>What I love about you lot is that you don\u2019t just sit on your hands.\u00a0 You roll up your sleeves and get on and do it\u201d <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Our next report comes from S.I. Penrith and District who have been busy in these sometimes quieter winter months:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Fashion Show :\u00a0 3rd March 2022 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Soroptimist International Penrith and District <\/strong>held a Fashion Show at Hackthorpe Village Hall raising funds for Charities supporting victims of Domestic Abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The show was put on by the Kitty Brown Boutique from Carnforth in Lancashire.\u00a0 We last held a Fashion Show showcasing her products in 2018.\u00a0 We were a little nervous about how such an event would be received after all the COVID restrictions and wondered if we would be well supported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">We had four models,\u00a0 a member of Penrith Club ( Gail Graveg);\u00a0\u00a0 an Associate Member ( Carol Rudd );\u00a0\u00a0 a friend of one of the members (Kathy Sharrock )\u00a0 and a lady fairly new to Penrith ( Jane Denny ).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6284\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8106-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8106-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8106.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6285\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8107-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8107-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8107.jpg 337w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/>They each wore 3 different,\u00a0 but complete outfits,\u00a0 which included accessories such as handbags, scarves, jewellery etc\u00a0 all supplied by the Boutique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">We had our display boards showing Programme Action work that we have been doing since our relaunch,\u00a0 which of course included Domestic Abuse and also photos about our winning the \u2018Reach for the Skies\u2019 regional Award.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">We need not have worried about the turn out for the Fashion Show as the Hall was full with just over 80 attendees and we will have raised in the region of \u00a3800 profit on the evening.\u00a0 \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The photograph above shows Associate Member Carol Rudd on the cat walk wearing one of the 3 chosen outfits for her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Penrith &amp; District <\/strong>are planning further events to raise the profile of projects connected to Domestic Abuse.\u00a0 On <strong>Monday 21st March ,\u00a0 <\/strong>in partnership with the Homeless Refuge at Carlisle they are hosting an open meeting at Penrith Methodist Church rooms at 7.30pm.\u00a0\u00a0 The speakers will be Mr Keith Scog ( Local Coordinator)\u00a0 and Mr Peter Rhodes ( Homeless accommodation Manager of the Carlisle Refuge ) .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The Refuge takes in quite a number of women and children who find themselves without a home from the Eden Valley area and the Penrith Club have been giving donations of various items to help in the work carried out there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">At the recent Fashion Show they took the opportunity of advertising this event by putting flyers on seats about the open meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Thinking about all the troubled peoples in the Ukraine and surrounding countries,\u00a0 I finish this Newsletter with two further quotes from the inspirational book\u00a0 \u201cBig Panda and Tiny Dragon\u201d by James Norbury\u00a0 (\u00a0 its still in the Sunday Times Best Sellers list !)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cI want to change the world\u201d,\u00a0 says Tiny Dragon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cStart with the next person who needs your help\u201d, replied Big Panda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0 and together we send our support and thoughts from all our SINE members to the people of Ukraine .\u00a0 Please do seek out your local collecting centre and see what you can donate to help with this crisis as they seem to be well organised and very specific about what items would be useful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cThe path ahead looks difficult\u201d, said Big Panda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cNo matter how hard it gets\u201d, said Tiny Dragon,\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ll face it together\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I wish you every success with your projects and activities on International Women\u2019s Day on Tuesday 8th March\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 and please do send me your reports and photographs for the next edition of this regional Newsletter ( number 82 ) on <strong>Sunday 20 March<\/strong>.\u00a0 As always, photographs sent separately as jpegs work well for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>FUTURE DATES : <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Saturday\u00a0 <strong>19 March\u00a0\u00a0 :\u00a0 SINE REGIONAL COUNCIL MEETING &#8211;\u00a0 <\/strong>sign in (virtually ) from 10.0am and prompt start at 10.30am.\u00a0\u00a0 President Pam\u2019s speaker to continue her theme of \u2018Exceptional Women\u2019\u00a0 will be Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson\u00a0 who will speak immediately after the business reports on the agenda are completed.\u00a0 Please do make sure your email link is registered through your club to Regional Secretary Joan Heckels to attend this meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Saturday\u00a0 <strong>9th April\u00a0 :\u00a0 SINE virtual Regional Coffee Gathering\u00a0 :\u00a0 <\/strong>from 10.30am to 11.30am.
