{"id":6317,"date":"2022-08-20T16:26:08","date_gmt":"2022-08-20T15:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/?p=6317"},"modified":"2022-08-20T16:26:56","modified_gmt":"2022-08-20T15:26:56","slug":"presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-84","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/2022\/08\/20\/presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-84\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidents Message and Newsletter Number 84"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">MESSAGE FROM REGIONAL PRESIDENT PAM\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Good Morning Sister Soroptimists,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I am starting my message for this edition remembering Elisabeth Elder,\u00a0 a committed and long standing Soroptimist.\u00a0 Sadly Elisabeth died on Thursday 7th April 2022,\u00a0 aged 92 years. Although she held various club positions when a member of S.I. Morpeth\u00a0 some of you will remember her as Regional President and Regional Organisation and Development Officer.\u00a0 I became acquainted with Elisabeth when I joined S.I. Morpeth and discovered she had lived opposite my grandmother but we had other common interests as we had both studied at Northern Counties College in Newcastle and been volunteers at the Morpeth Citizen Advice Bureau.\u00a0 Although we do not know the funeral arrangements at the moment, if anyone would like further details please contact Patricia Gatherum (email address <u>patriciagatherum@yahoo.co.uk<\/u>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 or\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 phone No: 01670 517699 ).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">News headlines\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 <strong>Taliban U-Turn over Afghan Girls\u2019 Education. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">When the Taliban took over Afghanistan again there was concern that girls would not be allowed to continue secondary education.\u00a0 However the Taliban seemed to reassure everyone this would not be the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">At the end of March 2022,\u00a0 girls across Afghanistan arrived for lessons when secondary schools were due to open for them for the first time since the Taliban seized power. Unfortunately, they were told to go home and informed that schools would remain closed indefinitely.\u00a0 It was reported that the young girls were so disappointed and upset by the fact they couldn\u2019t renew their education.\u00a0 The reasons given for this apparent u-turn were confused and contradictory.\u00a0 They suggest that there are deep rias within sectors of the Taliban about the future direction of rule in Afghanistan.\u00a0 As Soroptimists we view education to be essential for empowering and enabling women and girls to play an important role in their communities.\u00a0\u00a0 Therefore,\u00a0 hopefully the schools will soon be opened to the young girls to allow them to continue with their education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">A couple of days after writing my last Message for this Newsletter,\u00a0 I attended a talk about Dr Mo Mowlem &#8211; another \u2018Exceptional Woman\u2019.\u00a0 As a member of the Labour Party since 1969 she was respected for her frankness and became MP for Redcar in 1987.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In 1994, she helped to organise Tony Blair\u2019s leadership bid and he made her Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Just before the May 1997 general elections she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour and had to undergo radiotherapy and steroid treatment.\u00a0 Mo was \u2018Brave Mo\u2019 as she didn\u2019t let the treatment affect her work and when Labour won the 1997 elections she was appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland,\u00a0 a difficult and dangerous position. However she was remembered for her courage, humanity and public popularity when she won because of the way she handled her ministerial post in Northern Ireland.\u00a0\u00a0 She was instrumental in bringing the political representatives together which led to the Good Friday Agreement for Ireland being secured on 10th April 1998.\u00a0\u00a0 In 1999, she was replaced by Peter Mandelson and became responsible for several important issues including drugs policy and parliamentary reform.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Mo became increasingly disenchanted with Blair\u2019s Leadership and was a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq.\u00a0 In September 2000 she announced her intention to retire\u00a0 from Parliament and finally stepped down as an MP at the General Election of June 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">For nine years before her death in 2005 she denied having a malignant brain tumour\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 only her husband and doctor knew about it.\u00a0 A few years ago,\u00a0 a drama televised by Channel 4 called \u201cMo\u201d\u00a0 focussed on her life and her role played by Julie Walters\u00a0 was well worth watching and would still be of interest today if it is still available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>DATE for your Diaries : <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Regional President Pam\u2019s Event is on 25th June at the Auctioneer, Carlisle &#8211;\u00a0 the first opportunity to meet face to face since the start of lock down in March 2020.\u00a0 There will be plenty of time to chat with \u2018old\u2019 friends,\u00a0 hear from \u2018Exceptional Women\u2019 who have set up their own businesses and enjoy a buffet lunch.\u00a0 All clubs and members should receive the details\u00a0 shortly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Take care and look after yourselves<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Wishing you all a very Happy Easter and hoping the war in Ukraine is soon resolved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Regional President\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>PAM <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Editor :\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thank you President Pam for reminding us of yet another \u2018Remarkable Woman\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 in Mo Mowlem\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 long may the Peace Agreements hold in Ireland.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I hope that all club members will look out for the details and invitation to the President\u2019s Event in Carlisle on Saturday 25th June\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 see you all there !<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">News Letter<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">We start this Newsletter\u2019s reports with one from\u00a0 <strong>S.I. Penrith and District <\/strong>\u00a0who organised an Open Meeting about the <strong>Carlisle Refuge<\/strong> on Monday 21 March 2022.\u00a0\u00a0 The meeting was held in Penrith Methodist Church and aimed to provide information about how the Refuge works, who benefits\u00a0 and how people gain access to it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Mr Keith Scott, together with his wife Jeanette ( who are members of this Church ) have coordinated Refuge contributions for many years.\u00a0 Keith talked about the volunteer work they have been engaged in over the years,\u00a0 collecting donations of goods and money from church members and many other people and then making regular deliveries of items to the Refuge.\u00a0 He told the audience how they have found the work involved very rewarding as they can see how much it is appreciated by those staying at the Refuge.\u00a0\u00a0 Keith said \u2018The Refuge also takes in people referred to them from the Eden District who are homeless, including a number of Domestic Abuse victims.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The next delivery of donations to the Refuge will be collected between 9.0am and 10.0am on <strong>Wednesday 20th April <\/strong>\u00a0at Penrith Methodist Church.\u00a0 Special items being collected on that day are washing up bowls, liquids, tea towels, mugs, bowls and plates, cutlery, pots, pans and tin openers.\u00a0 Each person moving out of the Refuge into their own accommodation is given these items to start them off. Mr Peter Rhodes,\u00a0 Homeless Accommodation Manager at the Refuge told us that Cumbria County Council provided the two buildings,\u00a0 one for women and children and one for men, but all the council are obliged to fund is a room and a bed which means they are dependant on the generosity of the public to be able to provide everything else that is needed, including bedding, towels, food and clothing.\u00a0 Everyone who has a room also has access to the communal\u00a0 kitchen to cook their own food.\u00a0 The majority of the residents are referred to the Refuge by the Council, Social Services with the Police referring most of the victims of Domestic Abuse.\u00a0 Peter told us \u201cif someone turns up without a referral they would not be turned away as long as the staff were satisfied that their need was genuine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Ms Sharon Sanders, the Manager at the Women\u2019s Refuge, gave us lots of information about the type of donations they receive, what items they need and the practical help that is given to residents which assists when they move on into more permanent accommodation.\u00a0 She said \u201cwe feel that the practical help in relation to budgeting is particularly helpful as the lack of these skills has often contributed a lot of the residents being homeless in the first place\u201d. Penrith Soroptimist Club has been supporting the Refuge for some time with donations of toiletries, clothing, bedding and other items and recently donated \u00a3100.00 which was spent on new towels so residents could have a lovey new fluffy towel of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6314 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8401-187x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8401-187x300.jpg 187w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8401.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 171px) 100vw, 171px\" \/>Pat Newsham,\u00a0 secretary of SI Penrith and District, thanked the speakers for giving these talks and presented a cheque for \u00a3200.00 to Peter and Sharon for use as required.\u00a0\u00a0 (\u00a0 see photograph above )\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Recently a Fashion Show was held by Penrith Club\u00a0 ( see previous report with photos in a recent\u00a0 Newsletter )\u00a0 and raised funds for charities supporting Domestic Abuse and the Refuge is one of the charities chosen.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pat also thanked everyone for attending, and the Church for their hospitality.\u00a0 The Soroptimists then served tea or coffee with home-made tray bakes and the audience made generous donations\u00a0 which led to a further \u00a3146.00 being collected for the Refuge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Cris Young has sent me a photograph of the\u00a0 \u201cThank You\u201d certificate which she has received for the donation of \u00a3200 which was sent to Alzheimer\u2019s Research UK.\u00a0\u00a0 This sum was raised by the donations which were sent to her for copies of the booklet \u201cPoems that got us through the Lockdown\u201d.\u00a0 Cris has asked me to thank all SINE members who supported this project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6315 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8402-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8402-219x300.jpg 219w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8402.jpg 438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/>S.I.
