{"id":6364,"date":"2022-08-20T18:31:39","date_gmt":"2022-08-20T17:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/?p=6364"},"modified":"2022-08-20T18:31:39","modified_gmt":"2022-08-20T17:31:39","slug":"presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-89","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/2022\/08\/20\/presidents-message-and-newsletter-number-89\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidents Message and Newsletter Number 89"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Regional President Pam\u2019s Message<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Good Morning Sister Soroptimists,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I hope you and your gardens all managed to cope with the hot weather!\u00a0\u00a0 Fortunately, I don\u2019t think any of you in the Region have been placed on hosepipe bans yet although I realise some areas are badly affected by water shortages.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">When I wrote my last message I only had space to mention some of the events during the Queen\u2019s Platinum Jubilee so indicated that I would address others in this message.\u00a0 As already mentioned the weekend began on the Thursday with the Trooping of the Colour where the Prince of Wales took the salute on behalf of the Queen.\u00a0 That evening the next major event was the lighting of more than 7,000 beacons across the UK and in a number of Commonwealth countries.\u00a0 The Queen began lighting the principle beacon using the Commonwealth Nations Globe from Windsor.\u00a0 This in turn lit the Tree of Trees, consisting of 350 native trees outside Buckingham Palace.\u00a0\u00a0 Locally it was lovely to see a beacon being lit at Hadrian\u2019s Wall by shooting a flaming arrow from the hill side into the beacon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">On Friday a Service of Thanksgiving was held at St.Paul\u2019s Cathedral acknowledging the Queen\u2019s dedicated service as monarch.\u00a0 Although she did not aYend the service in person she did watch from Windsor Castle.\u00a0 Senior members of the royal family, with dignitaries from the Commonwealth, aYended the service with Prince Charles representing the Queen. A concert was held in front of Buckingham Palace on the third evening with present and past singers and entertainers performing.\u00a0 The concert began with music from \u2018Queen\u2019\u00a0 and ended with Diana Ross.\u00a0 Prior to the concert Paddington Bear was \u2018seen taking tea\u2019 with the Queen who showed she kept a marmalade sandwich in her handbag in case she was hungry! On the final day there was a magnificent street Pageant along the Mall to illustrate changes over the 7 decades of the Queen\u2019s reign.\u00a0 It began with a military spectacle celebrating Armed Forces from all three services in the UK and across the Commonwealth.\u00a0 With a cast of thousands, popular music, dance styles, fashion, youth culture and classic vehicles for each decade were included and demonstrated on double decker buses and by many street performers.\u00a0 Immediate members of the royal family joined the Queen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace amidst cheering which bought the Platinum Jubilee Weekend to a wonderful finale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">I had been looking forward to attending S.I. Sunderland\u2019s meeting on Wednesday 13th July however a few days after my wonderful gardens trip I tested positive for Covid and had to postpone my visit.\u00a0 Fortunately, we have been able to reschedule my talk to Wednesday 14th September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Finally, we must remember the Lionesses and their manager, Sarina Wiegman, who became the winners of the UEFA Women\u2019s Euro Football Championship last Sunday at Wembley.\u00a0 The match which saw the Lionesses beat Germany by 2 goals to 1 was watched by 17 million viewers.\u00a0 It was a marvellous achievement and has done a great deal to raise the awareness of women\u2019s football in the U.K.\u00a0\u00a0 In recognition of her talent and determination, Beth Reid was awarded The Player of the Tournament and Top Scorer.\u00a0 She also won Player of the Match twice, once for a hat trick and her impressive performance against Sweden in the semi-finals and secondly for her individual and team performance.\u00a0 Up to 7,000 fans turned up the next day at Trafalgar Square to celebrate the team\u2019s success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>STOP\u00a0 PRESS\u00a0 ! <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Thanks to Patricia Gatherum we will have a very special guest at our next Regional Council Meeting and AGM who will present the Regional Best Practice Award Certificates to those clubs who have been recognised for their outstanding Programme Action work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Soroptimist International President\u00a0 Maureen Maguire,\u00a0 <\/strong>has kindly agreed to come specially to attend our AGM.\u00a0 This is a great honour to have such an \u2018Exceptional Woman\u2019 willing to spend her precious time with us on <strong>Saturday 24th September at Scotch Corner.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Therefore, I look forward to seeing many of you at this meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Take care and look after yourselves<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Best Wishes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Pam\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>your Regional President<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>Editor :\u00a0 Thank you President Pam for reminding us of that marvellously joyful long weekend celebrating the Queen\u2019s Platinum Jubilee.\u00a0 We have one more report of club activities linked to the Jubilee and many of us will remember what a wonderful evening it was too &#8211; at S.I. Durham,\u00a0 who have sent in this report: <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4>Newsletter<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">On Friday 10th June 2022, S.I.<strong> Durham\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0hosted a Platinum Jubilee Dinner with a very special guest of honour,\u00a0 Her Majesty\u2019s Lord Lieutenant of Durham, Sue Snowdon.\u00a0 We were joined by sister Soroptimists from other clubs around the region, and even a member from Northern Ireland!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">There was a celebratory atmosphere at the Ballroom, Ramside Hall.\u00a0 Our event committee had made a superb job of dressing the venue, with balloons, bunting and beautiful table decorations !\u00a0 Favours for guests included a commemorative Platinum Jubilee brooch and a crown shaped chocolate truffle from local chocolatiers \u2018Chocolatrice\u2019 (their delicious chocolate can be purchased online at\u00a0 www.lachocolatrice.co.uk\u00a0 ! )\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">After a superb three course meal Sue Snowdon gave her after-dinner speech.\u00a0 Sue explained the role of the Lord Lieutenant as the Queens representative in County Durham.\u00a0 She is the first woman to hold the role and has a great many anecdotes from her time in post!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6357\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8901-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8901-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8901.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This photograph above shows the Lord Lieutenant of Durham Sue Snowdon with Joint\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Club Presidents Geraldine Hudson ( on the left ) and Sue Percival ( on the right).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">It was very interesting to learn how Sue is involved in planning and hosting royal visits to the area, her involvement with the armed forces and her commitment to the young people of the area.\u00a0 This Jubilee year has been particularly busy with celebratory events.\u00a0 Sue told us how children from primary schools across Durham were selected to join the Choristers of Durham Cathedral to form the Platinum Choir to perform an anthem \u201cThe Call of Wisdom\u201d written by local composer Will Todd in the Thanksgiving Service in Durham Cathedral during the Jubilee Weekend.\u00a0 Those of us who had been at the service agreed how beautifully the children had sung !<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The evening was a great success, and lovely to see people face-to-face again.\u00a0 It was a chance to renew old friendships and make new ones. GOD\u00a0 SAVE\u00a0 THE\u00a0 QUEEN\u00a0 !<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>Our next report is from S.I. Carlisle who are continuing their dedicated support to the Homeless Women\u2019s Hostel\u00a0\u00a0 : <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I. Carlisle recently<\/strong> made their largest yet delivery to their local Homeless Women\u2019s Hostel and with help from families and friends were able to provide and deliver:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">1 pair of curtains with duvet set to match; 4 pairs of curtains; 3 single duvet sets; 1 sheet; 3 suits of pyjamas; 3 small shopping bags; a shopping trolley and a large selection toiletries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">These items are all shown in the photograph below :<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6358 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8902-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8902-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8902-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8902.jpg 427w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">They were then loaded into a member\u2019s car boot before shopping for long-life groceries en- route to the hostel.\u00a0 It took 2 members with a trolley each to collect all the shopping.\u00a0 The supermarket kindly provided 4 very large boxes to stack them, and the car boot was so full we only just managed to close it!\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The groceries included 240 tea bags; 3 jars coffee; 4 bags sugar; 4 cartons of long-life milk and 11 packers of biscuits.\u00a0 These ensured that everyone had the necessary item to make that \u2018cuppa\u2019 which can be so comforting when anyone is suffering from stress.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6359 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8903-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8903-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8903.jpg 803w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/>We also provided a few items to make easy meals until benefits could be claimed.\u00a0 They were 10 packets of breakfast cereals; 6 jars of pasta sauce (we were told that they already had a large stack of pasta );\u00a0 6 tins of chunky soup, 4 packs of noodles; 2 tins tuna and 2 tins corned beef.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Sharon was on duty when we arrived at the hostel, and she was delighted when she saw the contents of the car boot.\u00a0 She produced a very clean wheelbarrow to help us unload it all, since she didn\u2019t have a trolley available.\u00a0 What a pity I didn\u2019t think to take a photo of her pushing it up the ramp into the entrance hall, since she had to do that 4 times!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The need for food for the ladies is going to become even more important as prices are rising. We now have a raffle at every club meeting and all the cash we raise is going towards this. We hope to make a food delivery at the hostel once a month, always checking in advance which items of food are most needed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>Thank you to Jess Sinclair for keeping us informed of their club\u2019s much needed support to the homeless women in Carlisle. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><em>Our next report from S.I. Newcastle upon Tyne shows progress at the small holding \u2018Fallowlees\u2019\u00a0 in the Harewood Forest where the West End Women and Girls Centre is developing an outdoor farming space for their members to work, relax and grow\u00a0 : <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I.Newcastle upon Tyne\u00a0 <\/strong>on Thursday 30th June,\u00a0 undertook some hard work as part of their Programme Action on Climate Change\u00a0 and in remembrance of one of our late members ( Dorothy Sisterson ).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We were finally able to plant our trees at the West End Women and Girl\u2019s Centre farm in rural Northumberland.\u00a0 The planting had been delayed until the deer proof fencing could be installed and this had taken time due to the shortage of zinc required to make the fencing as a result of the conflict in the Ukraine.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The trees were a mixture of Rowans and Hazels and will form a natural screen inside the metal fencing as well as a more biodiverse habitat for local insect and bird life.\u00a0\u00a0 Lesley, a friend of one of our members, planted a silver birch in memory of her mother.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The first photograph below is of Patricia Gatherum with her Rowan tree, spade and stakes ready to start planting.\u00a0\u00a0 The rough grassland made digging hard!\u00a0\u00a0 This photograph gives some sense of the isolation of the farm which is 6 miles from the nearest road and accessed via a\u00a0 very long and winding forest track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6360\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8904-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8904-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8904.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6361\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8905-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8905-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8905.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In the photograph above are the club members ( from the left )\u00a0 PA Lead Christine Lowthian; and Lis Graham.\u00a0 Off screen we were also joined by Cris Young who took this photograph.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">It was amazing to see how much progress has been made since December.\u00a0 Also, to see the good use the Centre has made of the Grant of \u00a39,795 from the Churchill Fellowship Trust, obtained through one of our members.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The majority of this grant had been used to re-covered and renovate the old poly tunnel which now provides shelter from the weather for growing activities.\u00a0 There were three planted beds with crops ready to harvest.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The former derelict poly tunnel had been used for some time as a sheep pen so there was no need to add fertilisers to the soil!\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6362 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8906-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8906-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8906.jpg 602w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The farm has a number of goats and sheep including some very vocal Jacob\u2019s sheep, some black faced sheep and some black Hebridean sheep.\u00a0 The sheep had recently been shorn and one use for the cleaned fleece was going to be to stuff cushions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The photograph below shows the first vegetable beds inside the wonderfully spacious, weatherproof and renovated poly tunnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">We enjoyed our packed lunches under cover in the barn together with Jill (the Development Worker) and Shireen (the lead gardener) from the West End Women and Girls Centre.\u00a0 We were shown the architect\u2019s plans for the conversion and use of the outbuildings which will provide overnight accommodation and a large kitchen for the Centre\u2019s visiting members. We all thoroughly enjoyed our day out, the exercise, fresh air ( even the rain kept off until our lunch break) and company of friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6363\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8907-300x89.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"89\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8907-300x89.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/northern-england\/files\/2022\/08\/NL8907.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>DATES\u00a0 FOR\u00a0 YOUR\u00a0 DIARY : <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>S.I.Middlesbrough\u00a0 <\/strong>will be visiting Ormesby Hall in Middlesbrough on <strong>Saturday 20 August from 2.0pm to 4.0pm <\/strong>for their summer event and invite friends to join them.\u00a0 No need to book!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Ormesby Hall is a National Trust property, and Grade 1 listed building.\u00a0 The 18th century manor house was the former home of the Pennyman family.\u00a0 It stands in extensive grounds to the south of Middlesbrough.\u00a0 The address is Church Lane, Middlesbrough TS3 0SP. Admission is\u00a0 \u00a36 for adults &#8211;\u00a0 free to N.T. members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The visit may include the house itself, with drawing room, bedrooms, gallery and kitchen.
