SI NORTHWICH – CHARTERED 18th<\/sup> MAY 1949<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2019 SI Northwich celebrated its 70th anniversary.\u00a0\u00a0 Our founder members must have had drive, ambition and energy to set up as a group of professional women inspired to offer service, raise money and help others in need.\u00a0 Our archives show that they made a huge success of it.\u00a0 Following a war that had changed our country there was much privation and hardship, sorrow and loss;\u00a0 but also hope for tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soroptimism flourished in the 1940s.\u00a0 Our \u2018Grandmother’ club, SI Birkenhead<\/a>,\u00a0was chartered in 1943 and our \u2018Mother’ club, SI Runcorn<\/a>, \u00a0is only 2 years older than we are.\u00a0 We had a \u2018daughter’ chartered in 1967 – SI Knutsford – which unfortunately folded in the late 1990s.<\/span><\/p>\n

From our earliest years service was at the centre of our club.\u00a0 Social services were non-existent, so the work within the community undertaken by the members was much needed and much appreciated.\u00a0 Fund raising helped to underwrite the costs of their activities. One of the first projects was to furnish a room in a home being set up for the elderly who had little money.<\/span><\/p>\n

Support for the blind was one worthy endeavour, but the enduring support for the mentally handicapped is legendary. Founder member,<\/span>Beryl Marsh had a severely\u00a0disabled son of her own who suffered from Down’s Syndrome, was blind and also deaf.\u00a0 Her own experience fired her commitment to change attitudes and support parents at a time when such children were shunned by society.\u00a0 She had linked up with other local parents to form a group called \u2018The National Society for the Parents of Backward Children’ which eventually became Mid-Cheshire Mencap.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fund raising events to support our many charities has always been varied.\u00a0 Our biggest and most successful money raiser has been our \u2018Slave Auction’ – now our \u2018Auction of Promises’.\u00a0 It evolved from the club’s original Christmas auction of bric-a-brac when one member moved to Northwich from Whitehaven in 1989, bringing with her the idea of auctioning \u2018service’, home-made cakes, chutneys, dinner parties etc.\u00a0 Year on year it has raised thousands of pounds in one evening.\u00a0 Our record stands at \u00a35,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our members’ service has primarily been offered to Cheshire Without Abuse<\/a> (Women’s Refuge), the MS Society, Vale Royal Contact Centre, the Stroke Club, Home Start and Gleave Wood Care Home. More recently we have supported and worked in partnership with Motherwell, a local women’s charity, supporting local women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our strength as a club derives from our friendships, and\u00a0 are strengthened by our contact during acts of service, our fund-raising activities and the social events purchased and provided at the auction.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are proud of our contributions to Soroptimist International. Our members have attended conferences around the world and in the UK and at region level we have had members who have taken on officer roles, including 1 member who has been Regional President on 2 occasions.<\/p>\n

Now moving towards 75 years on from our Charter, we are in a changing world, and as a club we are ready to meet changes and challenges that would have been unbelievable in 1949.\u00a0 We have embraced modern technology that is now available to us and we hope to increase our profile, make ourselves more recognisable and well-known in our local area, and to attract new members to join us.\u00a0 Please do visit us again to find out more about us.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
