Club Members meet Government Minister
Members of Soroptimist International Nottingham recently met with Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities. Club Member Margaret Oldroyd invited the Minister to Nottingham Women’s Centre to see the work that is done there. The Centre is a vital facility where women can receive help following domestic abuse or sexual violence, access training to improve their confidence and employability, and receive support to improve their mental health and self-esteem.
Soroptimist International Nottingham have supported the Women’s Centre in a number of ways for many years, including running a course to help women improve their CV writing and interview technique, helping run the weekly job club, and providing funding for a variety of projects, including renovation work and most recently the installation of wifi throughout the building.
Lesley Steele is Chair to the Board of Trustees at the Women’s Centre as well as being an active member of SI Nottingham, and along with Centre Manager Mel Jeffs, staff and service users, highlighted the need for consistent and reliable funding for Women’s Centres. Nicky Morgan again recognised the work which Soroptimists are doing in relation to women’s centres and reducing women’s imprisonment.
