90th Anniversary : Outstanding Women<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are delighted to introduce our latest pair of Outstanding Women, Joy Cummings-Jones of Soul of Africa Youth Leadership Programme and our own club member, Lina Morgan<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Joy writes:<\/p>\n

In 2005, during a family visit to Sierra Leone after the civil war, we met twenty 11-year-olds who asked one powerful question: could they learn to become \u201cgood leaders,\u201d better than those they had known?<\/p>\n

That moment stayed with me and became the foundation of the Soul of Africa Youth Leadership (SoAYL) Programme. Initially we raised funds, consulted young people, and launched our first one-week residential programme in 2009<\/p>\n

I serve as Chair, but SoAYL is a collective effort\u2014delivered by a dedicated team of Sierra Leoneans in Sierra Leone, diaspora members in the UK, families, and friends.<\/p>\n

Today, in partnership with schools and community organisations in Freetown, SoAYL has grown into a year-long leadership journey. We equip secondary school students with practical skills, ethical values, integrity, and a spirit of service, so they can lead positive change in their own lives, their communities, Sierra Leone, Africa, and the wider world with confidence. My link with Soroptimist Nottingham Members<\/p>\n

We are deeply grateful for Nottingham Soroptimist\u2019s long standing support. As girls make up half of the young people we serve, the wisdom and empathy gained from the international knowledge of the two Soroptimists on our Board have played a vital role in shaping both our thinking and our practice.<\/p>\n

Lina writes:<\/p>\n

When my friend Stella of SI Ife in Nigeria invited me to the Soroptimist International conference she was attending in Nottingham, little did I know the lasting effect it would have on me. There, I met the most inspiring and amazing women all in one place. I wanted to be one of them! I soon found out that the colleague I shared an office with was a Soroptimist. I was invited to a meeting where I was warmly received and immediately felt at home. Thanks to Stella, I have enjoyed being a sister to many amazing women for over thirty years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As a Midwife Teacher, I was aware of the often-hidden strength, resilience and skills of women that were taken for granted sometimes by themselves, and often by others, and the support needed for them to realise their potential. Moving from teaching students on the Pre-Registration course, who were mostly young female adults, to teaching those on Post-Registration courses who were experienced in the profession and more mature in age, and as an Examiner of the Midwifery Pre-Registration course and External Examiner of one of the Post-Registration courses I was responsible for, I had the privilege of meeting a variety of very remarkable women. I found interacting with the women I cared for, my colleagues and students very refreshing and educational and my feeling about women\u2019s potential continued to gain strength as I got to know my Soroptimist sisters. Empowering women and girls is not just a Soroptimist dream; it is a reality, and it is heart-warming to witness the many ways this is achieved locally, nationally and internationally. One of the things I cherish is the warmth and friendship that is always generously shared.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Meeting Soroptimists from other Clubs is like meeting long lost friends. I have had the delight of meeting sisters in Helsinki, Freetown, Karlsruhe and Minnesota while on holiday by simply making contact and introducing myself. In all cases, I was received with such warmth and true Soroptimist spirit and made to feel very welcome and special.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As our Club\u2019s International Friendship Link Coordinator, it is a privilege to communicate with, share news and learn more about clubs in other parts of the world. It is heart-warming to experience the Vision and Mission of Soroptimist International in action not only in our club but internationally.<\/p>\n

My relationship with Nottingham Soroptimists means the world to me. From the moment we met at our first Community Network event, it\u2019s been\u00a0women\u00a0supporting\u00a0women\u00a0in the most genuine way. Your passion and generosity for our\u00a0women\u2019s services at Framework is incredible – you are true cheerleaders for change, and I\u2019m proud to stand alongside you. Next year is Framework\u2019s 25th anniversary, and I can\u2019t wait to celebrate with you all –\u00a0 one event I’m most excited about is International\u00a0Women\u2019s Day, where you\u2019ll be first on my invite list!<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nI\u2019m Loren Shore, Community Fundraiser at Framework, Nottinghamshire\u2019s homelessness charity. I joined Framework in 2022 after leaving the corporate world, wanting to do work that felt meaningful, human and rooted in real change.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My role is all about people. I spend my time out in the community, building relationships with supporters, volunteers and community groups, and creating opportunities for them to connect with Framework\u2019s work. I\u2019m especially passionate about championing our\u00a0women-focused services, spending time visiting them, listening to staff and residents, and helping to shine a light on the incredible work being done behind the scenes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I believe my greatest strength is simply being myself –\u00a0 bringing warmth, energy and honesty into every conversation, and helping people feel at ease. I\u2019m a mum of two, and everything I do is shaped by the example I want to set for my daughter: kindness, emotional honesty, and\u00a0women\u00a0supporting\u00a0women.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sue Warriner says:<\/p>\n

I joined Hertford Soroptimists in 1982, looking for contact with interesting women when my children were very young, When I moved to Nottingham I found a huge variety of new friends and supportive contacts \u2013 there were 92 members! My career as a health visitor has involved community development, health promotion, research projects and latterly working with Gypsies and Travellers and homeless families. I won The Health Visitors\u2019 Association \u201cHealth Visitor of the Year\u201d in 2002 and a \u201cStar of the NHS\u201d award in 2008\u2019s 60th<\/sup> anniversary.<\/p>\n

Belonging to Soroptimist International has enhanced my life, offering endless opportunities to help women and girls and enjoy fun, friendship and worthwhile work with amazing women. From Midsummer\u2019s Eve in a fjord in Norway to going down Myra\u2019s gold mine in Bendigo, Australia, to listening to Mary Robinson in Dublin, it has been a privilege.<\/p>\n

Currently I am jointly co-ordinating our service work \u2013 our Programme of Action. Projects I have most enjoyed over the years include establishing and working on the Millenium Millions appeal for the Nottingham Breast Care Centre, \u201cWomen into Work\u201d courses, toilets for elderly women (with our link club in Eldoret, Kenya) and the best fun was making a Miyawake Forest during Covid.<\/p>\n

My longest and most rewarding project work has been with the Nottingham Child Contact Centre, my involvement starting in 1999 as a volunteer. Over the last 7 years I have been Chair and sadly have been very involved in its closure in 2025.<\/p>\n

Our December\/January our next pair of outstanding women are Hilary Brown (Director, Phenomenal Futures) and Soroptimist, Mary Drake<\/p>\n

Mary Drake writes: I was born in Tanzania later moving to live Kampala in Uganda, then to the UK. I worked as a nurse in Intensive Care before teaching in the University of Nottingham. Eventually I was promoted to Associate Professor and Quality Coordinator for Nursing, Midwifery and Physiotherapy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Following retirement I began as a volunteer gardener at Treetops Hospice where I met Perdita Harvey, also a volunteer gardener, who introduced me to Soroptimists. From the first meeting I was made welcome and impressed with their dedication to actively improve the lives of women and girls. This is both locally and internationally, and as individuals and collectively.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As a Soroptimist I have helped clear and replant the overgrown garden at WeRHere, a counselling service for women and families. I now regularly maintain the garden there for Phenomenal Futures and through these organisations I met the dynamic, wonderful and caring Hilary Brown.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I found it interesting taking part in the Soroptimist nationwide research into aspects of Magistrates Court handling of Domestic Violence cases specifically the protection of women and families during and after their involvement in the process. In the report, \u201cSpecialist Domestic Abuse Courts (SDAC) How special were they in 2022?\u201d, Nottingham came out very well.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The women\u2019s refuges in Nottingham are another area of our involvement, our recent projects with them have included erecting a greenhouse, helping with the garden,and providing indoor plants. We continue providing Welcome packs for all the women on arrival plus. Moving On packs when they leave and presents for each woman at Christmas. Delivering bikes and scooters from Pushbike Paul when they are needed and available feels worthwhile , seeing the independence this gives to the women and the older children going to school.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Soroptimist members have helped develop a library within a refuge donating a variety of books and providing bags of clothes for women and children including school uniforms. Other support for the refuges has included donations of toys and help with play equipment.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Currently I am writing a letter to local officials and the Soroptimist Federation regarding following up Domestic Homicide Reviews. Government has indicated the review and recommendations following every death due to domestic violence death should be published within six months and implemented as soon as possible to prevent further deaths. This doesn\u2019t appear to be happening, yet and is an important area for Soroptimist advoc<\/p>\n

November\/December’s pair of outstanding women are Georgina Wilding (Poet and Events Lead at Nottingham City Libraries) and our own Margaret Oldroyd<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We are delighted to partner with Nottingham City Libraries to celebrate 90 years of Nottingham\u2019s Soroptimist Club, especially highlighting its work to support the survivors of domestic abuse and to lobby for better services for them. Our display in the Central Library runs from 25th November (International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women)\u00a0to 10th December (Human Rights Day).<\/p>\n

Georgina Wilding writes :<\/p>\n

As the Libraries Events Lead for Nottingham City Council, it\u2019s my great joy to pull together as many facets of Nottingham\u2019s cultural landscape as I can, and showcase their work here at the library. Demonstrating the empowering work that the Soroptimists are doing for our women and girls not only celebrates them, but facilitates the opportunity for more people to discover the invaluable help that\u2019s available.
\nThe first year that the library opened was also my first year in post, and upon the discovery that over the 200-odd events I\u2019d organised in that year, over 4,500 people attended, I could not have been prouder. As an advocate for literature, arts and culture and the change they can make in a person\u2019s life, it was a true \u2018pinch-me\u2019 moment to process that impact.<\/p>\n

Margaret Oldroyd<\/p>\n

As we mark the opening of our Soroptimist International Nottingham 90th anniversary exhibition at Nottingham Central Library, we are delighted to celebrate our amazing member, Margaret Oldroyd.
\nMargaret, a past Federation\u00a0President, is our Club Secretary and \u2018go to person\u2019 for Soroptimist knowledge. We are privileged to have her as a member.<\/p>\n

Margaret says : I became a Soroptimist because the idea of working with like-minded women to improve the lives of other women really appealed to me. I was also attracted by joining a women\u2019s organisation with a global reach. Here in Nottingham, our work to support and give new opportunities to survivors of domestic abuse and to advocate for a world free from gender-based violence is particularly close to my heart. As someone who spent all my career working in Colleges and Universities, education projects are another favourite as we know that this is the key factor in achieving long term and lasting change in women\u2019s lives. Supporting the education of a girl in Kenya, mock interviews for sixth formers at Nottingham Emmanuel School and awarding prizes to outstanding journalism students at Nottingham Trent University all help with this objective.<\/p>\n

During nearly 40 years of membership, the organisation has given me huge opportunities, for example, to see Soroptimist projects on the ground especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was a privilege to advise the fledgling Management Board of our new African Federation and wonderful to see them now leading a continent-wide initiative to eradicate cervical cancer. Membership of Soroptimist International has given me insights into the lives of others, joy from making even a little difference and friendships to be treasured.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The Nottingham Soroptimists are an incredible group of amazing women who empower women and girls through their impactful work. The support they offer to refuges is huge and makes such a difference to the women fleeing Domestic Abuse. The work they do is empowering and I truly value it.\u00a0<\/b>
\n<\/b>\u00a0I am a passionate advocate for families fleeing Domestic Abuse, I was awarded an MBE in the Queens New Years Honours in 2019 for services to Victims of Domestic Abuse, this was for my work with setting up the J9 initiative in Nottingham, The J9 project trains frontline staff in community spaces to: recognise signs of domestic abuse and respond appropriately to survivors.\u00a0When a space displays the\u00a0J9 logo, it means trained staff are present, and\u00a0survivors can safely ask for help.<\/b><\/p>\n

My passion is fundraising for local refuges, appealing for essential items for women and children and gifts at Christmas and Easter.<\/b><\/p>\n

I have the huge honour of being the Ambassador for Central Women\u2019s Aid, an amazing charity who support families to live a life free from Domestic Abuse.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0I first heard about Soroptimism from a friend who was a member of SI Nottingham.\u00a0 My interest grew after speaking to two work colleagues who were passionate about this organisation which was serving the needs of women and girls throughout the world.\u00a0 I remain a member because I feel a connection with our Vision and Mission, I love the international aspect and above all the friendship.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
One of Soroptimist International of Nottingham’s longest continuous projects is the support given to the three Women’s Refuges.\u00a0 The Club provides ‘welcome’ and ‘move on’ packs 2-3 times a year and Christmas presents for the women.\u00a0 I am the liaison member for the Central Refuge which can house 6 women and up to 11 children in its main refuge and 3 women and up to 12 children in its dispersed properties.\u00a0 I deliver the packs and presents and other items on an ad hoc basis. The staff know that I can be contacted at anytime if they feel the Club can provide help or support.<\/div>\n

For May<\/strong>, our first pair of amazing women is Rachel and Judy. RACHEL CARTER (photo on left, below) is the sculptor of ‘Standing In This Place\u2019, a bronze statue recognising the legacies of the transatlantic cotton workers, installed in the heart of the rejuvenated Broad Marsh area in Nottingham City Centre. JUDY ROBINSON (seen on left of second photo, below) is a member of Soroptimist International Nottingham, campaigner for more representation of women in public art and the model for one of the figures.<\/p>\n

RACHEL CARTER says : working with organisations such as Nottingham\u2019s Soroptimists, is really important especially when working on new public realm pieces such as Standing In This Place. The collaboration and inclusion of many members allows them to take ownership of my work as they feel connected and a part of the work. In the words of Maya Angelou (1928-2014) \u201cLet me remind all women that we live longer and better lives when we have sisters we love, not necessarily born in our bloodline or of our race.”
\nRachel\u2019s Work and achievements
\nArtistic – Working from The Garden Studio on the Derbyshire \/ Nottinghamshire border, she works with hand processes and the ancient lost wax technique to create large scale public realm sculpture, alongside sculptures for home and garden.<\/p>\n

Process – Since graduating with a Sustainable Applied Arts degree Rachel has been driven by the application of hand weaving processes to create intricate textures and forms for sculpture. Using the lost wax casting technique, she continues to collaborate with Pangolin Editions foundry to push the boundaries of this craft form, combining historic textile techniques with new digital technologies.<\/p>\n

History – Many of her commissions are underpinned by a love of history, and she sees the opportunity to represent our shared and complex histories within sculpture as an honour. Looking at her own ancestry often provides inspiration for new work, adding to a long legacy of weavers, knotters and makers that stretch back over 350 years of the East Midlands industrial heritage.<\/p>\n

Community – Rachel\u2019s latest project Standing In This Place is an arts and heritage project in collaboration with the Legacy Makers group formed in 2014 by Bright Ideas Nottingham and the collaborative community-academic Global Cotton Connections project. It looks to highlight the contributions and connections between white mill workers and black enslaved women uprooted to the Americas, showing how their stories and histories are connected by cotton, sorrow, strength and resilience.

JUDY ROBINSON tells how her involvement with the project and with Soroptimists came about. Standing In This Place makes history as the UK\u2019s first sculpture to recognise the transatlantic cotton trade story, as well as addressing the imbalance that less than 5% of Britain\u2019s sculptures portray non-royal women – and even fewer are women of colour.
\nIn retirement I was fortunate to find a group who wanted to dance and needed a facilitator. Deane McQueen\u2019s\u00a0experience, skills and humour gave us\u00a0wonderful workshops and\u00a0then introduced us to the Legacy Makers (a Nottingham community history group)\u00a0and the sculptor, Rachel Carter. In only 5 weeks, we danced with new partners from the Caribbean, shared our stories and\u00a0histories\u00a0and began to understand the thinking behind this unique project. What a roller-coaster from then on!\u00a0By week three, the Stitchers were already making our costumes.<\/p>\n

I enjoy meeting new people and new experiences. There were so many strands to this Project as it grew and drew in poets, artists, braiders, photographers, video makers, writers, historians and foundry workers. I began to realise after the first whirlwind year both the important impact the statue could have and also the mountain we still had to climb to raise the funding. Staying involved in my case owed much to Rachel and the Legacy Makers. in particular my dancing partner. When explaining my involvement, I found that \u2018 Challenge the 5%\u2019 became a rallying call I felt proud to be associated with.
\nIt was \u2018spreading the word\u2019 to other women which brought me in contact with Soroptimist International of Nottingham. I count myself very fortunate to have found and joined this organisation which is both international and local\u00a0with a longstanding commitment to women and\u00a0girls.
\nSince becoming a member I have valued the friendship,\u00a0determined efficiency, caring and positivity of the club\u2019s members. Finally, I salute their generosity and support of all kinds from members coming to talks , films, celebrations and\u00a0exhibitions\u00a0over the 3 years, to donations and an invitation to the sculptor to speak to our organisation.<\/p>\n

Orange cafe<\/h3>\n

We held\u00a0 a very successful Orange Cafe on Tuesday, 24th September at St Peter’s Church Cafe, near Marks and Spencer’s. Four of our members chatted to over 40 people to explain what we do as Soroptimists and what the ‘Orange the World’ campaign is all about. Watch out for news of our next event when we welcome you to come and say ‘Hi’ and find out who we are and why we’re ‘Standing up for women’<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, 14th August we were joined by family and friends for a lovely walk around Rushcliffe Country Park followed by a picnic. A chance to come together during our summer break<\/p>\n

Plans have been unveiled for a statue highlighting the historical connection between women who worked in East Midlands cotton mills and those who grew the plant as slaves in the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The aim is for the sculpture to be installed as part of the regeneration of Nottingham’s Broadmarsh area, once home to textile and dye works.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Its creators say it will portray themes of sorrow, strength and resilience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
