{"id":509,"date":"2014-07-23T21:40:42","date_gmt":"2014-07-23T20:40:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/nottingham\/?page_id=509"},"modified":"2020-04-24T12:33:15","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T11:33:15","slug":"award","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/nottingham\/what-we-do\/award\/","title":{"rendered":"2014 Journalist Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1221&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Laura Hough, just graduated from the Nottingham Trent University Department of Broadcasting and Journalism, is the winner this year of Soroptimist International Nottingham\u2019s Student Award for Journalism.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To enter the award, students were asked to submit an audio or video presentation which highlighted issues which have a potentially detrimental effect on the lives and aspirations of vulnerable young women in today\u2019s Britain.\u00a0 Submissions included forced marriage, anorexia nervosa, laddish humour and its effect on the victims of rape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Laura\u2019s project was an audio presentation on the theme of Female Genital Mutilation. Despite being \u00a0illegal in the UK for over 30 years, it is estimated that more than 20,000 girls a year are at risk of this violation. \u00a0&#8220;I am very proud to have done this project,\u201d explained Laura. \u201cIt was difficult at times, but I am pleased to have helped in raising awareness of this issue&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The aim of the award, donated by SI Nottingham, is to raise students\u2019 awareness of women\u2019s issues in the media, as well as being aware of the key values of Soroptimism that all women and girls should achieve their individual and collective potential. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">As the standard was so high this year, it was decided to award a runner up to the award. Kelly Petterssen was nominated for her hard hitting project about the fate of Girls in Gangs, based in Nottingham.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">SI Nottingham would like to thank all staff in the department of Broadcasting and Journalism for their support for this award, in particular Academic Team Leader Carole
