{"id":4503,"date":"2020-06-01T21:28:44","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T20:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/preston\/?p=4503"},"modified":"2020-06-02T17:13:31","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T16:13:31","slug":"volunteer-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/preston\/2020\/06\/01\/volunteer-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteer Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk\/virtual-village-hall\/activity\/volunteers-week-event-of-thanks?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9azH4MHj6QIVG-vtCh1wdgl6EAAYASAAEgKuvfD_BwE\">Volunteers&#8217; Week <\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity where an individual or group freely gives time &#8220;to benefit another person, group or organization&#8221;. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development and is often intended to promote goodness or to improve human quality of life<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Or so Wikipedia says!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/\">Soroptimists<\/a><\/em>&#8211; it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/preston\/programme-action-work-20122013\/\"><em>what we do<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 It is our main reason for being a member of the organisation.\u00a0 It\u2019s our project work.<\/p>\n<p>But \u2013 many of us beaver away doing other activities that are not involved with being a member of the club.\u00a0 Giving our time and skills, \u2018putting something back\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What do we do?<\/h2>\n<p>Some of the organisations and charities our members are involved with are:<\/p>\n<p>Life Education, Osteoporosis, Save the Children, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.piescharity.org.uk\/\">Partners in Education Swaziland (PIES<\/a><\/em>), <em><a href=\"https:\/\/milesofsmileslancashire.com\/\">Miles of Smiles<\/a><\/em>, The Friendship Foundation, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stcatherines.co.uk\/\">St Catherine\u2019s Hospice<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0 RNLI, Help Tibet&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.\u00a0 We fundraise, bake cakes, send emails, make phone calls, do accounts, administer websites,\u00a0 attend meetings, serve tea (and cakes!), clean and tidy, help customers and so on and on and on. Then there\u2019s the Mother\u2019s Union secretaries, Friends of the Church and the local library. The list goes on. \u00a0\u00a0We do what is asked and needed at the time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How many hours do we give?<\/h2>\n<p>Who knows ?
