She explained that the law is divided between criminal and civil case. Criminal cases are brought by the state for offenses against society, while civil cases are personal or business disputes. Criminal law requires proof beyond reasonable doubt. It is criminal law which is dealt with by magistrates and they handle 95% of all cases fully. The remaining 5% of cases are referred up to higher courts, the Crown Court. Magistrates also sit in the Family Court.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Three magistrates sit in court with a legal advisor. They decide where the case will be held and whether the accused will be held on bail or in custody. If the likely sentence is less than 12 months, which will be suspended, it is unlikely that the accused will be kept on remand. Bail may come with restrictions. Many cases result in conditional discharge, ie. no re-offense to take place, with a possible fine, community order and\/or unpaid work. All offenses have sentencing guidelines which the magistrates must follow.<\/p>\n<p>Many considerations affect the sentence: the seriousness of the offense, whether the accused pleads guilty, or shows remorse, or whether they have a criminal record.<\/p>\n<p>We were most grateful to Caroline for her brief but comprehensive explanation of her role.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Become a Magistrate<\/h2>\n<p>Anyone of good character, resident in UK, between 18 and 74 years old can apply to become a magistrate. There is an interview process and if accepted, full training is given. You need to commit to sitting for at least 13 days a year for 5 years. Magistrates sit until 75, but it is unlikely that they would be appointed beyond the age of 70.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h1>Capturing the moment<\/h1>\n<p>Louise presented some of her favourite photographs and talked about her passion for capturing images for posterity. During the Covid pandemic, she documented some of the sights of people queuing in facemasks at social distances, which we took for granted at the time, but now look eerily strange.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=&#8221;image_grid&#8221; images=&#8221;7237,7240&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Louise also like taking photographs in the street, particularly of dogs and cats. She is hoping to publish a book of these photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Louise also manipulates some images to transform them into artistic
