Dunfermline Conference\u00a0centre was the setting for this year’s Joint Conference –\u00a0Scotland North and South Regions.\u00a0 Around one hundred delegates attended this excellent venue. As ever it was good to meet ‘old’ friends and make new ones.<\/p>\n

Scotland South President Marain Sapcote<\/strong> chaired the morning session.<\/p>\n

The keynote speaker of the day was Sarah Brown, President of Theirworld. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Sarah\u00a0gave an inspirational talk about the importance of getting all of the world’s\u00a0children into education both male and female. In particular she spoke of the harrowing experiences of young Syrian children suddenly removed from their homes and of course their schools. Sarah spoke of the very simple solution that her organisation had put forward to educate the children in the refugee camps of Lebanon: have two school sittings per day -Lebanese children early morning to mid-afternoon, refugee children mid-afternoon to evening; the staff coming not only\u00a0from among Lebanese citizens\u00a0but also refugees themselves.<\/p>\n

Deborah Grossman<\/strong> gave a very informative outline of\u00a0Barnardos work in Scotland.<\/p>\n

It was good to have SIGBI President Margaret Emsley\u00a0<\/strong>in attendance. Margaret\u00a0 presented Vision 2021- SIGBI Strategic Plan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0afternoon session was chaired by Scotland North President Jean Campbell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the afternoon session was the Programme Action Award<\/strong>. Three projects were shortlisted out of twenty submissions from across Scotland.<\/p>\n

SI Dunfermline Rwenzori Project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

SI Dundee’s Seema’s Project<\/strong> – presented by Pam Cairns.<\/p>\n

SI Dundee’s Toilet Twinning Project <\/strong>– presented by Elaine Ferrie.<\/p>\n

SI Dunfermline was this year’s\u00a0worthy winners receiving the Dorothy Lawrie Cup.<\/strong>\u00a0 SI Dundee, although runner up ,was delighted to have had\u00a0two projects shortlisted.<\/p>\n
