4 March 2021 Tree Planting and Preservation

Benmore Avenue Project

47 people  attended the presentation on the Benmore Avenue Project today.  SI SS R President Tina welcomed presenters Ruth Strain and Peter Baxter, SIGBI President Elect Cathy Cottridge and Yvonne Freeman, APD Partnerships, members and guests.

Presenters

Ruth Strain, Development Manager, RBGE, was joined by Peter Baxter, Curator, Benmore Botanic Garden.  Peter described the problems caused by climate change and steps being taken offset effects. The giant redwoods are still growing but not thriving.  They have been damaged by storms causing flooding and high winds.  With appropriate steps taken now, the giant redwoods could live for thousands of years.

The Giant Redwood Avenue at Benmore is the finest in Britain, if not in Europe.  Surely worth preserving?

Which SDG’s are being addressed by this project?

SDG 13 Climate Action; SDG 15 Life on Land.

Benmore Avenue Project 2021

Information on Benmore Avenue, prepared for Soroptimist International, February 2021.

Author: Ruth Strain, Development Manager, Royal Botanic Gardens, (RBGE), Edinburgh

Help protect Scotland’s Giant Redwoods

Planted in 1863, the 49 Giant Redwoods at Benmore Botanic Garden in Scotland are some of Europe’s oldest and tallest Sequoiadendron giganteum, reaching more than 50m high. They are now facing new risks from climate change, and require innovative techniques to protect them against waterlogging and disease.

You can help safeguard the Giant Redwood Avenue at Benmore Botanic Garden for future generations  to enjoy by making a gift here.

Continue a 100 – year legacy of Saving the Redwoods

When the first Soroptimist club was founded in Alameda County in 1921, it’s first project was to ‘Save the Redwoods’ in California.  To mark this centenary, you can help save Scotland’s Giant Redwoods in Benmore Botanic Garden.  Planted in 1863, these 158-year-old trees are some of Europe’s oldest and tallest Sequoiadendron giganteum, and require innovative techniques to protect them against the effects of climate change.
