Dr Helen Pankhurst"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Further Congratulations to Joanna, Jane and Sheila, our wonderful <strong><em>\u201cWalk \u00a0in \u00a0Her<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Shoes\u201d <\/em><\/strong>volunteers. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0They jointly raised the wonderful sum of \u00a3850, which will be doubled by Government matched funding. All funds that were pledged for Walk In Her Shoes by 4 June will be used to\u00a0\u00a0 introduce a number of life-changing improvements for the women and girls of the Afar region of Ethiopia \u2013 one of the most geographically remote and inhospitable areas of Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Because of our write-up in the Craven Herald which was spotted by CARE International, <strong><em>SI Skipton<\/em><\/strong> were invited to enter into a draw for community groups who had completed the <strong><em>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Walk<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>in<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Her<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Shoes Challenge\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>SI Skipton<\/em><\/strong> were picked as the winners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">The prize is to have Dr Helen Pankhurst, great grand-daughter of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst as a guest speaker on Monday 19<sup>th<\/sup> September 2016.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(Further details to be announced).<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Helen is <strong>CARE\u00a0\u00a0 International<\/strong> UK\u2019s campaign ambassador for the <strong><em>Voices<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Against<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Violence<\/em><\/strong> and most recently <strong><em>the Walk in Her Shoes Campaign<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>s.<\/em><\/strong> Helen is also a Senior Technical \u00a0Advisor for the Water Team of CARE USA with a remit of support to CARE\u2019s water sector work internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Helen was born in Ethiopia and worked there for three years as the Country Representative for WaterAid. She also worked as Head of International Programmes for five years at <strong><em>WOMANKIND <\/em><\/strong>Worldwide and for five years as the Regional Manager for the Horn of Africa at the Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development (ACORD).
