In 1939 the family moved to Amsterdam to escape the Nazis. Anne had a happy home life and wanted to become a journalist. After the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands however, life for Jewish people became increasingly difficult. In 1942 the Frank family, Anne, her sister Margot and their parents, went into hiding in the annexe of a large house which is now a museum. Anne used her diary to describe their day to day life, and her thoughts about life in general. The family was discovered in 1944. Anne and her sister were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau and to Bergen-Belsen in 1945, where they both died. Anne\u2019s diary was later discovered by chance and published.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ada Lovelace, computer programmer<\/strong>.\u00a0 Ada Lovelace first met Charles Babbage in June 1833 and he invited her to see the prototype for his difference engine. \u00a0She became fascinated with the machine and visited Babbage as often as she could. \u00a0Babbage was impressed by Lovelace&#8217;s intellect and analytic skills.\u00a0 She believed that intuition and imagination were critical to effectively applying mathematical and scientific concepts. \u00a0She valued metaphysics as much as mathematics, viewing both as tools for exploring &#8220;the unseen worlds around us&#8221;.\u00a0 In her notes, Ada Lovelace emphasised the difference between the Analytical Engine and previous calculating machines, particularly its ability to be programmed to solve problems of any complexity.\u00a0 For this, she is regarded as the first computer programmer.<\/li>\n<li><b>Simone Biles, gymnast.<\/b> Simone Biles is widely regarded as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time and one of the greatest female athletes in history.\u00a0 Her 11 Olympic medals and 30 World Championship medals (all but seven gold) make her the most decorated gymnast in history.\u00a0 She also has the most Olympic medals earned by a US gymnast.\u00a0 In 2024, Simone became the fourth American female artistic gymnast to compete at three Olympic Games.\u00a0 She has won numerous prestigious awards for her gymnastic achievements.\u00a0 In 2025, at the annual US Excellence in Sports Performance Awards, Simone received the Best Championship Performance award and Best Female Athlete award.<\/li>\n<li><b>Frida Kahlo, artist<\/b>. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican artist and socialist. She was disabled by poliomyelitis and a traffic accident but used her problems to fuel her art.\u00a0 She stressed her Mexican identity by wearing brightly coloured traditional clothing, in itself a protest against the erosion of national and female identity. Her bright pictures show animals, birds, local fruit and a large number of self-portraits, many of which depict her physical problems as well as her choice of traditional costume.\u00a0 She was re-discovered in the 1970s after her death when she was seen as a female icon of feminism, political activism and the importance of national identity.<\/li>\n<li><b>Helen Sherman, astronaut<\/b>. \u00a0She counts as a scientist because she studied chemistry at Birkbeck College, London.\u00a0 She applied to a job advert on the radio that said: \u201castronaut wanted: no experience necessary\u201d.\u00a0 Helen\u2019s scientific background, her aptitude for foreign languages, and her high level of fitness helped her beat nearly 13,000 other applicants.\u00a0 She launched on Project Juno in 1991 and spent 8 days on the Mir space station, as the first British astronaut.\u00a0 While in space, she ran various biological experiments and investigated crystal growth in microgravity as well as chatted with British school children over amateur radio.<\/li>\n<li>The rest of the 23 Iconic Women we have chosen are famous for all sorts of other reasons.\u00a0 Some were activists, for Human Rights or climate change, but we also have a pilot, an artist, a singer\/songwriter, an author and a nurse.<\/li>\n<li>Six scientists are included in our chosen Iconic Women;<\/li>\n<li>There will be 3 athletes featured in the display;<\/li>\n<li>We are including 5 Queens in this number;<\/li>\n<li>There will be 23 Iconic Women featured on the bollard toppers for International Women\u2019s Day 2027, on 8th March.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>August Update: <\/strong>we have finalised all the arrangements, and are ready to start announcing our choices for the display! \u00a0Look out for a weekly post on Facebook, showcasing each of the Iconic Women that will appear on the Titchfield bollards in March 2027.<\/p>\n<p><b>March Update<\/b>: there was a PR workshop at our regional meeting in March, where each club was asked to present their impact from media engagement.\u00a0 We presented our plans for the bollard toppers &#8211; and we won the delegates&#8217; choice prize!\u00a0 It proved that a memorable idea &#8211; a gimmick &#8211; can be as effective as the standard print and digital media stories that other clubs have successfully promoted.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sisolenteast\/posts\/pfbid04TGXHfXLqby7maUpQJeKxvDiT1J3nZbzvcDjuspz9XuNQ4pGYbzdHDm4CEuES3DHl\">Link to Facebook post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong>:\u00a0 Several club members had seen the handiwork of Titchfield Yarnbombers for the row of bollards in the village, and approached them with a proposal for a joint project with a similar display for International Women\u2019s Day (IWD).\u00a0 This would be for 8 March 2027.\u00a0 The suggestion was for toppers shaped like a woman and celebrate famous examples, such as Jane Austen, Queen Elizabeth II, or round the world sailor Dee Caffari (who lives in Titchfield, and could maybe \u201copen\u201d the display?).\u00a0 There are 23 bollards for toppers and the Titchfield Yarnbombers group already had a book of Crochet 15 Iconic Women.\u00a0 There were patterns for Queen Elizabeth II, Jane Austen, Marie Curie, Florence Nightingale, Malala Yousafzai, Rosa Parks, Jane Goodall, and Cleopatra.\u00a0 SI Solent East has bought them the sequel, of Crochet More Iconic Women.\u00a0 That includes patterns for Dolly Parton, Queen Elizabeth I, Ada Lovelace, Anne Frank, Greta Thunberg and others.\u00a0 We will be working together to select the 23 toppers to be made, and what might happen to them afterwards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/solent-east\/files\/2026\/03\/2026-Toppers-with-sea-theme.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4848\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/solent-east\/files\/2026\/03\/2026-Toppers-with-sea-theme.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"127\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/solent-east\/files\/2026\/03\/2026-Toppers-Iconic-Women.jpg\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4849\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/solent-east\/files\/2026\/03\/2026-Toppers-Iconic-Women.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"170\" \/> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/solent-east\/files\/2026\/03\/2026-More-iconic-women.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4850\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/solent-east\/files\/2026\/03\/2026-More-iconic-women.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This page will be used to give more details about the famous women displayed, and will be the destination for the QR code attached to the actual toppers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Working with Titchfield Yarnbombers to celebrate International Women&#8217;s Day 2027.
