Lack of archival material and the passing away of all of the founder members of the first club doesn\u2019t help. It seems some of the original documents got severely damaged in a flood situation Mumbai(then Bombay) often experiences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4674\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/1.-At-the-Charter-of-SI-Calcutta-1979-1024x604-300x177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/1.-At-the-Charter-of-SI-Calcutta-1979-1024x604-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/1.-At-the-Charter-of-SI-Calcutta-1979-1024x604.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>But it was in\u00a0<strong>1974<\/strong>\u00a0that\u00a0<strong>Perin Bhiwandiwala<\/strong>, became the\u00a0<strong>Founder President of the first Soroptimist Club in India.<\/strong>Perin, was educated in England and the first Indian female architect. It is surmised that while in England, she came to know of the organization. On her return she was able to gather a nucleus of enthusiastic women- all professionals and over several meetings and cups of tea the first club took shape.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dorothy Mackenzie<\/strong>\u00a0White represented SIGBI to\u00a0<strong>Charter the first club SI Bombay North on the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0of September 1974<\/strong>. There were 17 members all in high positions both at work and in social circles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4675\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/2.Charter-Certificate-of-SI-Burdwan-1987-768x1024-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/2.Charter-Certificate-of-SI-Burdwan-1987-768x1024-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/2.Charter-Certificate-of-SI-Burdwan-1987-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/>Another chance meeting resulted in\u00a0<strong>SI Calcutta<\/strong>\u00a0coming together. There is an interesting story of a Calcutta lady\u00a0<strong>Aroti Dutta<\/strong>\u00a0being sick while in London. Her hostess cared for and when Aroti asked what she can do in return she responded- was start a club in your city. On her return Aroti held many meetings at her home enlightening those present with the philosophy of Soroptimists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SI Calcutta was chartered on 27th October 1979\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; With 23 members, and\u00a0<strong>Jean Wishart<\/strong>\u00a0from SIGBI presented the Charter to\u00a0<strong>Aroti Dutta as Founder President and Laxmi Parasuram<\/strong>\u00a0as the Secretary. Aroti Dutta played a constructive role and later was\u00a0<strong>elected as the first NASI President in 1990.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Aroti Dutta of SI Calcutta took the idea forward to the small town\u00a0<strong>Burdwan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laxmi Parasuram of SI Calcutta<\/strong>, an enthusiastic academician was a natural mentor and took on the task. It took about 735 days for the professional women of the town to be enamoured by an organization with a difficult sounding name! Convinced they were, and in\u00a0<strong>August 1987, SI Burdwan was born.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>SIGBI President Katharine Fussel<\/strong>\u00a0presented the Charter to\u00a0<strong>Santanwana Sen the Founder President<\/strong>\u00a0and Amita Bhattacharya as Treasurer. 15 professional members mostly teachers and professors from women colleges joined as the founding members.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4676\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/3.-The-Five-O-Project-in-Calcutta-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/3.-The-Five-O-Project-in-Calcutta-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/3.-The-Five-O-Project-in-Calcutta.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Founder President Aroti Dutta and founder member Chitra Ghosh initiated the formation of\u00a0<strong>Project 5 -\u201cO\u201din \u00a0Bratachari village in Joka, West Bengal.<\/strong>\u00a0The project was adopted for different activities for women in the field of education and vocational training.<\/p>\n<p>There was a move to start a\u00a0<strong>National Association in India.<\/strong>\u00a0Aroti, Antoinette D\u2019costa, Chitra Ghosh, Sheela Rao and Laxmi worked hard on this.\u00a0<strong>The first NASI Board took office in 1990.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/the-history-of-soroptimists-in-india\/soroptimists-in-india\/\"><strong>Click here to Read more about \u00a0NASI<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those were not the days of internet and cell phones.\u00a0<strong>Sheela Rao<\/strong>\u00a0remembers having to constantly be at the post office to mail documents to NASI board and to SIGBI Office.\u00a0 Moreover, everything had to be hand written or typed and then photocopied! Despite that, Soroptimists took roots &#8211; a tad slowly though.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4677\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/4.-Charter-of-SI-Poona-1991-1024x771-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/4.-Charter-of-SI-Poona-1991-1024x771-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/4.-Charter-of-SI-Poona-1991-1024x771.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>When\u00a0<strong>Sheela Rao a member of Bombay North,<\/strong>\u00a0relocate to\u00a0<strong>Poona<\/strong>\u00a0she met\u00a0<strong>Gulshan Thukral from SI Jabalpur<\/strong>\u00a0(now non-existence) who too had moved there. Together they were able to attract enough interested women fromdiverse professions to join. Mentoring was in constant supply from Sara Chandy of Bombay North and Antoinette D\u2019Costa of the Bombay City Club. In April 1991, new Club\u00a0<strong>SI Poona was chartered by Aroti Dutta,<\/strong>\u00a0the first President of NASI, on behalf of SIGBI President -Jane Barrie. Gulshan took on as Founder President with Sheela as the Secretary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SI Bombay North Club<\/strong>\u00a0with missionary zeal sought to mentor more Clubs &#8211;<strong>Sara Chandy the Extension Officer of NASI<\/strong>\u00a0motivated professional women in another apart of the large city of Bombay \u2013 and\u00a0<strong>SI Bombay West<\/strong>\u00a0came together. That was\u00a0<strong>Sept 1992. Nalini Mudbkatkal was elected as Founder President<\/strong>\u00a0and she is still participating in club activities. Some of the Founder members hold the club together.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4678\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/India-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/India-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/India.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Antoinette D\u2019Costa President of the SI South Bombay<\/strong>\u00a0(now non-existent) Club took on the role of being the mother club to another Club in the city\u00a0<strong>SI Bombay Chembur. In November 1997 by Elizabeth Hughes<\/strong>\u00a0from SIGBI flew in to charter the Club.\u00a0<strong>The Founder President was Daphne Pillai<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SI Chennai \u2013 (then Madras)<\/strong>\u00a0was mentored by Sara Chandy of SI Bombay North. Kamala Prasad a business woman of the city was motivated to start a club. With\u00a0<strong>Kamala Prasad as the Founder President<\/strong>\u00a0and 29 members the club was chartered on\u00a0<strong>14th\u00a0Dec 1998<\/strong>\u00a0-. Kamala Prasad later went on the become the NASI President.<\/p>\n<p>During her tenure as NASI President Kamala Prasad was able to Charter two Clubs.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Chennai Downtown was Chartered Sept 2002 and Gopi Narayanan installed as the Founder President<\/strong>. The membership\u00a0of 25 composed of educators and business women, some who were already part of the city\u2019s Chambers of Commerce. Kamala also started a\u00a0<strong>Club in Hyderabad<\/strong>, which unfortunately closed down in a few years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4679\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/5.-Charter-of-SI-South-Kolkata-2006-1024x510-300x149.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/5.-Charter-of-SI-South-Kolkata-2006-1024x510-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/5.-Charter-of-SI-South-Kolkata-2006-1024x510.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>More Clubs sprouted in South India.\u00a0<strong>Nalini Subbaiah<\/strong>, gathered 15 women coming from different professional backgrounds to form\u00a0<strong>SI Bangalore.<\/strong>\u00a0They found common interest in serving the society and belief in Soroptimist ideology. After working together successfully for a year they were chartered on\u00a0<strong>10th January 2004<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Jackie Mosedale,<\/strong>the Extension Officer from SIGBI did the honours and Nalini became the Founder President.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calcutta had become Kolkata<\/strong>\u00a0by now. Laxmi Parasuram, of the Calcutta Club mentored once again a bunch of administrators, business women, doctors, educationists, executives, scientist and social workers. The outcome was\u00a0<strong>SI South Kolkata. SIGBI President Ann Dawson<\/strong>\u00a0came in with a group of SIGBI officials to present the charter on\u00a0<strong>21st September 2006.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Bijli Mallik was the Founder President<\/strong>\u00a0with 20 founding members.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4680\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/6.-Charter-of-SI-Pune-Metro-East-2010-1024x681-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/6.-Charter-of-SI-Pune-Metro-East-2010-1024x681-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/6.-Charter-of-SI-Pune-Metro-East-2010-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Taking advantage of growing city of Poona-now Pune,\u00a0<strong>six members of SI Poona<\/strong>\u00a0moved to form club in another part of the city. With the advantage of already being familiar with the organization it took less than 11 months to get the Club going.\u00a0<strong>SI Pune Metro East was chartered by SIGBI President -Jackie Mosedale on 31st January 2010<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Founder President Nisha Ghosh<\/strong>\u00a0received the Charter in the presence of\u00a0<strong>SI President Hanne Jensbo,<\/strong>\u00a0and 42 overseas Soroptimists. The 30 founding members were given the true taste of the international dimension of the organisation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Madurai<\/strong> is an industrial city with a conservative community, but\u00a0<strong>Naina Shah\u2019s (of SI Chennai Downtown)<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4685\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/7.-Charter-of-SI-Madurai-2010-1024x547-1-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/7.-Charter-of-SI-Madurai-2010-1024x547-1-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/7.-Charter-of-SI-Madurai-2010-1024x547-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Soroptimist! NASI Extension Officer Annette Macarenhas<\/strong>\u00a0chartered them on\u00a0<strong>14th September 2010,<\/strong>\u00a0on behalf of the\u00a0<strong>SIGBI President Jackie Mosedale.Anitha Rajarajan took on the mantle of Founder President<\/strong>\u00a0and with 25 founding members were ready to introduce the organisation to their city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/SI-Madurai-History.pdf\">SI Madurai History<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Waiting in the wings was another club in\u00a0<strong>Bangalore.<\/strong>\u00a0With the concerted efforts and mentoring of\u00a0<strong>Matilda Mathias<\/strong>, a member of Bangalore attracted the younger women- IT professionals of modern India. SI Chennai\u00a0mentored them and in\u00a0<strong>August 2015-NASI President Shreelatha Narayanan chartered <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4682\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/8.-Charter-of-SI-Whitefield-2015-1024x576-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/8.-Charter-of-SI-Whitefield-2015-1024x576-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/8.-Charter-of-SI-Whitefield-2015-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>SI Whitefield<\/strong>\u00a0on behalf of SIGBI President Jenny Vince. A strong team of 35 highly qualified professionals joined the Soroptimist family with\u00a0<strong>Rachna Gupta as the Founder President.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once again, an attempt was made to establish a Club in\u00a0<strong>Hyderabad<\/strong>\u00a0a city that had undergone a sea change in the past 10 years. NASI Extension Officer\u00a0<strong>Rema Ramchandran (<\/strong>of SI Bangalore) worked tirelessly to get the club up and running. In\u00a0<strong>November 2018<\/strong>\u00a0the Charter was formally handed to the\u00a0<strong>Founder President Deepika Chalasani by NASI President Latha Krishnan<\/strong>\u00a0on behalf of SIGBI President Susan Biggs. Megha Gupta the Secretary along with 32 members began a new chapter for Soroptimism in India.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4681\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/soroptimistcentenary2021\/files\/9.-Charter-of-SI-Hyderabad-2018-1024x682-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"
