They provide some warmth\u00a0 for the elderly as they sit\u00a0 in their day rooms and the\u00a0 bits and pieces\u00a0 attached give them\u00a0 a distraction for their\u00a0 hands and fingers which might otherwise be\u00a0 causing damage to their skins through repetitive\u00a0 rubbing and scratching.
