{"id":1076,"date":"2013-03-28T01:46:21","date_gmt":"2013-03-28T00:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/?p=1076"},"modified":"2019-03-05T23:24:49","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T22:24:49","slug":"cheque-handover-at-celebration-lunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/2013\/03\/28\/cheque-handover-at-celebration-lunch\/","title":{"rendered":"Cheque Handover at Celebration Lunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Soroptimists from all over South Lancashire attended a lunch in Stockport to celebrate Liz McConnell\u2019s current year as Regional President.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/south-lancashire\/files\/2013\/03\/Soroptimists-with-cheque-for-breast-cancer-research.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1080\" src=\"\/south-lancashire\/files\/2013\/03\/Soroptimists-with-cheque-for-breast-cancer-research.jpg\" alt=\"soroptimists with cheque for breast cancer research\" width=\"360\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/files\/2013\/03\/Soroptimists-with-cheque-for-breast-cancer-research.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/files\/2013\/03\/Soroptimists-with-cheque-for-breast-cancer-research-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a>To surprise their hard-working colleague, the Stockport club members\u00a0\u2013 who organised the event \u2013 kept many of the details \u2018under wraps\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Special guest was Tony Howell, Professor of Medical Oncology, formerly of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Unit, and currently at the Genesis Prevention Centre, both in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>Under successive club presidents Myra Woodcock and Susan Wagstaff, SI Stockport has had a two-year drive to raise funds for Professor Howell\u2019s research. This massive effort \u2013 plus the proceeds from President Liz\u2019s &#8216;women-centred&#8217; regional <a title=\"link to regional burns supper 2013\" href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/2013\/01\/26\/regional-burns-supper\/\">Burns\u00a0Supper<\/a> \u2013 raised \u00a36,000.<a href=\"\/south-lancashire\/files\/2013\/03\/Soroptimists-7-at-regional-lunch-Stockport.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1084 alignleft\" src=\"\/south-lancashire\/files\/2013\/03\/Soroptimists-7-at-regional-lunch-Stockport.jpg\" alt=\"soroptimists at regional lunch in stockport\" width=\"360\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/files\/2013\/03\/Soroptimists-7-at-regional-lunch-Stockport.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/files\/2013\/03\/Soroptimists-7-at-regional-lunch-Stockport-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Accepting the cheque, Professor Howell promised that the funds will go direct to the breast cancer research unit at The Christie Hospital, Manchester. Current work there is focussing on a new generation of preventative and therapeutic drugs that will, in time, benefit thousands of women.
