{"id":157,"date":"2011-06-22T23:26:19","date_gmt":"2011-06-22T22:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soroptimist-gbi.org\/south-lancashire\/?p=157"},"modified":"2019-03-05T17:54:33","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T16:54:33","slug":"programme-action-guest-speaker-on-tuberculosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/2011\/06\/22\/programme-action-guest-speaker-on-tuberculosis\/","title":{"rendered":"Programme Action : Guest Speaker on Tuberculosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-158\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/files\/2011\/06\/soroptimists-and-speaker-from-target-tuberculosis-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"soroptimists and speaker from target tuberculosis\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/files\/2011\/06\/soroptimists-and-speaker-from-target-tuberculosis-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/files\/2011\/06\/soroptimists-and-speaker-from-target-tuberculosis.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On behalf of South Lancashire&#8217;s Soroptimists, the region&#8217;s Programme Action Officer &#8211; Eileen Griffiths &#8211; welcomed Clare Shaw from Target Tuberculosis as their guest speaker at\u00a0the\u00a0summer meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Clare&#8217;s initial quiz highlighted how little is generally known about TB &#8211; how it is transmitted from person to person &#8211; how prevalent it is worldwide &#8211; and how \u2018active&#8217; TB is rightly feared as a killer disease, particularly in poorer communities.<\/p>\n<p>TB is the biggest infectious killer of young women in the world today. Through cultural restrictions, poverty, lack of understanding, or other barriers, women tend to present later and therefore have a lesser chance of receiving successful treatment. Yet testing and treatment are generally free.<\/p>\n<p>TB is a global crisis; however there is relatively little modern investment in diagnosis and treatment. A full course of antibiotics still takes 6-9 months to complete, otherwise there is the risk of developing drug-resistant TB, which is far costlier to detect and treat.<\/p>\n<p>Working with communities to ensure effective testing and treatment is a challenge. <a title=\"link to target tuberculosis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.targettuberculosis.org.uk\/\">Target Tuberculosis<\/a> actively tackles this challenge by organising frontline health and education projects.
