\"soroptimist<\/a>South Lancashire\u2019s guest at the winter Programme Action Meeting was Janet Hodgson, Assistant Programme Director for Learning Opportunities<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Janet\u00a0gave an update on the Belfast Conference resolution on relationships education, now in its second year. The Soroptimists in Southend are leading this project, and offer comprehensive details<\/a>\u00a0on further progress.\u00a0She outlined the Gateshead Conference resolutions<\/a>, on endometriosis and on modern day slavery, and urged members to take action in support.\u00a0Members head about\u00a0Janet\u2019s work as our representative on the working group GAPS<\/a> (Gender Action for Peace and Security). Finally, Janet explained the implications for SIGBI (Soroptimist International, Great Britain and Ireland) now that our Federation has been granted Category 2 Status with the United Nations<\/a> Economic and Social Council.<\/p>\n

Margaret Molyneux (Regional Programme Action Officer) congratulated SI Leigh and District on being included in Soroptimist International\u2019s Global Impact Report 2012-3<\/a>. The club\u2019s \u2018Just the Job\u2019 project, in which unemployed women are helped to develop the skills and confidence to apply for work, was selected as a Project of Excellence.<\/p>\n

Yvonne Gibbon (Project Ambassador) updated members on The BIG<\/a> (Birthing in the Gambia) Project. Over \u00a377,000 has now been raised for maternal facilities and infant care: our Federation target is \u00a3100,000 by next November\u2019s Harrogate Conference.<\/p>\n

Carol Cookson (SI Southport)\u00a0reported on\u00a0the conference \u2018Women: victims, offenders or survivors?\u2019 held by the North West Practitioner Forum<\/a>. This is the\u00a0initiative of Greater Manchester Probation Trust and Manchester Metropolitan University to bring together professionals working in criminal justice and related agencies.<\/p>\n

In the afternoon Regional President Victoria Smerdon chaired her first Council Meeting. Her theme \u2018Mum\u2019s the Word\u2019 has two aspects \u2013 our women-centred work and our tendency to keep quiet about Soroptimism. These will feature at the Regional Conference<\/a> and through the Rose Bowl Challenge. Then there\u2019s another skydive, plus her\u00a0decision to \u2018run the region\u2019 in a Soroptimist t-shirt. Our youngest-ever Regional President (by four months, over Pauline Birkett of SI Bootle, 1971-72) is\u00a0planning a busy\u00a0and productive year.<\/p>\n

At this pre-Christmas meeting there were several sales opportunities. Hosts SI Bury sold mince pies in aid of The BIG Project. Wendy Ross-Barker (SI Widnes) set up her usual\u00a0Fairtrade table; bunting and Lancashire roses on SI Crosby\u2019s Baggatelles<\/em><\/a> stall attracted interest. Finally, SI Wigan\u2019s mound of knitted Christmas decorations made a colourful splash.<\/p>\n
