The theme of South Lancashire\u2019s Spring\u00a0Regional Programme Action meeting was endometriosis. This links with current work that Soroptimists are undertaking to publicise the symptoms of endometriosis and the importance of early diagnosis.<\/p>\n

The speaker was Clair Bottomley, group leader for Manchester\u2019s support group, set up through the charity Endometriosis UK. Clair is one of the 2.5 million women in the UK who have been diagnosed with endometriosis. However, this identification took many years: the average diagnosis time in the UK is eight years.<\/p>\n

Endometriosis is a \u2018hidden illness\u2019, not necessarily well recognised within the medical profession, and not featuring highly in public awareness. Therefore teenage girls and women can endure pain, heavy bleeding, bowel and bladder problems, and a host of other symptoms (many of which are addressed as though caused by other illnesses) before endometriosis is confirmed. Subsequent surgery and drug regimes attempt to lessen the various symptoms \u2013 but what works for one woman may not work for another. As yet, there is no \u2018cure\u2019.<\/p>\n

Newly-diagnosed patients may have little understanding of the condition, of treatment options and of self-help. Therefore support groups (such as the one in Manchester, which Clair set up) can be invaluable. Endometriosis UK<\/a> is also a central resource for the women and their families.<\/p>\n

Margaret Molyneux, Regional Programme Action Officer said, \u201cClair\u2019s personal story is traumatic; however, her commitment to widening awareness of this debilitating illness is astounding.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope Soroptimists in our Region will take to heart the programme resolution passed at the Gateshead Conference, and make every effort to alert young women and girls, health providers and the general public to the symptoms of endometriosis and the importance of early diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Special guests at this Spring meeting were Programme Action Officers Chris Clark (SI Yorkshire Region) and Ruth Bruce (SI North West England & Isle of Man Region).<\/p>\n

At the Regional Council meeting in the afternoon, President Victoria was delighted to show off the first of her \u2018Run the Region\u2019 medals, and to announce the next races in her year-long project.<\/p>\n

\"see<\/a>Victoria also reminded members that International President Ann Garvie will be joining her and President-Elect Margaret Baker for a skydive in aid of \u2018See Solar, Cook Solar\u2019<\/a>. Clubs are urged to mark this special event by raising\u00a0funds – and maybe a glass or two on 15th June – for\u00a0this international appeal.<\/p>\n
