Once again Soroptimists in the Leigh & District Club concluded a successful bowls season by \u2018doing the double\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

High-scoring members from <\/span>four clubs competed for the singles trophy on finals day \u2013 Widnes, Liverpool, Leigh & District, and Crosby. In the 3-way play-off last year\u2019s winner Gail Farrer (SI Leigh & District) faced Sandy Taylor and Yvonne Atkinson (both SI Crosby).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was nip-and-tuck throughout the game \u2013 to the delight of all the spectators. There were 37 ends before Gail was able to snap up two points for a grandstand finish.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Region’s <\/span>bowls trophy is awarded to the team that, over the season, gains the most points against Soroptimist clubs in the Region. The regional president usually presents it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On finals day, however, there was the conundrum: the regional president was the winning captain!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pat Woodward (President SI Leigh & District) was therefore delighted to have the honour of presenting the team trophy <\/span>to Margaret Molyneux and her Leigh players.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Shirley Smith (Captain, SI Crosby team) presented Gail with the Tricia Fahey Cup. This honours the Crosby club member who, when regional president, devised the regional bowls competition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dot Massey (regional bowls co-ordinator) presented SI Crosby with a new plaque, as runners-up in the team competition<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dot said, \u201cSadly the weather was dull and drizzly. However, in the shelter of a massive gazebo the spectators were able to enjoy all the matches \u2013 and the players didn\u2019t get too wet. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“As always competition was keen \u2013 and the 3-way singles final kept us all on edge. It was a good day!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
