South Lancashire Soroptimists recently held \u2018virtual\u2019 regional meetings. Covid-19 action reports featured strongly.<\/h5>\n

All clubs are very active during the Covid-19 pandemic. They are offering practical support to their own members \u2013 particularly those who are shielded \u2013 and to the wider community.<\/p>\n

St Helens club, for example, gave a consignment of soaps to the local homeless centre to commemorate the club\u2019s 77th anniversary. Liverpool\u2019s Soroptimists have supplied toiletries and household items for the Whitechapel Centre for homeless people. Widnes and St Helens members have also been busy providing buckets full of cleaning materials \u2013 and in responding to pleas for more.<\/p>\n

Leigh & District\u2019s gift hampers for care home staff \u2018made\u2019 the local newspaper; and members gave local young carers aged 5 to 11 – so isolated at this difficult time – bags of \u2018treats\u2019.<\/p>\n

Crafts have featured widely \u2013 sewn face masks for GP surgeries in Warrington; scrubs and face masks in Crosby; knitted \u2018mask-extenders\u2019 in St Helens; twiddle muffs in Southport. Leigh & District Soroptimists made scrub bags in response to a plea from one member, a midwife.<\/p>\n

Bootle & District club members \u2013 in common with Soroptimists throughout the region \u2013 have continued to donate quantities of essential items to local foodbanks.<\/p>\n

Southport\u2019s Soroptimists responded to a plea from Greenbank High School for support for girls who needed computers for their home-schooling.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s aid organisations continue to receive financial assistance from local clubs, including in Manchester. Crosby\u2019s \u2018marathon\u2019 (to commemorate the club\u2019s 82nd anniversary) raised much needed funds for their local domestic violence charity.<\/p>\n

Sriya Kulupana, the region\u2019s Programme Action Officer, co-ordinated the reports. As Sriya said: \u201cSouth Lancashire\u2019s Soroptimists may be in \u2018lockdown\u2019, but practical support for women and girls is being maintained. Local members are identifying local needs \u2013 and acting on them.\u201d<\/p>\n
