South Lancashire\u2019s Soroptimists in action \u2026<\/h5>\n

At the recent regional Programme Action meeting several South Lancashire clubs took the opportunity to showcase their projects. \u2018Planet\u2019 and \u2018People\u2019 featured strongly. These relate directly to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

SI Manchester<\/a>\u2019s members are taking a 12-month \u2018Green Footprint\u2019 personal challenge. How easy is it to reduce our carbon footprint? The Soroptimists will find out. Another Manchester project focussing on the environment is a local directory of recycling and collections. This brings information together in a handy \u2013 and easily updated \u2013 format.<\/p>\n

In Crosby<\/a>, the club has a partnership with the Wildlife Trust (Lancashire, Manchester & North Merseyside). The Soroptimists have nurtured hundreds of native wildflowers from seed at home. They have now planted out the flowers at Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve. These will increase biodiversity and enhance the environment.<\/p>\n

Wigan<\/a> Soroptimists have an active tree-planting project. A local school will soon be the home for 100 young trees. This will commemorate Soroptimist International\u2019s centenary year, as well as benefit the locality.[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”white”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid grid_id=”vc_gid:1631553403170-1e15269e-09ea-3″ include=”5354,5352,5346″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Soroptimist clubs have close links with local charities that support women and children who experience domestic violence.<\/p>\n

SI St Helens<\/a>\u2019 members provide \u2018fresh start\u2019 bags for women embarking on the local ‘Pause’ programme. The club also created simple \u2018cheer up\u2019 bags in the run-up to Christmas \u2013 an emotional season for the women if separated from their children. Simple gifts of toiletries, nibbles, drinking chocolate, etc mean a lot. They show that someone cares.<\/p>\n

In Ashton under Lyne<\/a>, the club is working with local initiative Cascade, in partnership with local midwives. Families in poverty receive a \u2018baby basket\u2019 with two weeks\u2019 supplies of baby clothes and other essentials. Club members have knitted some of the items; others are gifts from family and friends.<\/p>\n

Manchester\u2019s Soroptimists have responded to an appeal from New Hope, India, for woolly hats for children. The charity cares for orphans, leprosy sufferers and society\u2019s \u2018outcasts\u2019. Night-time temperatures can plummet \u2013 hence the need for hats.<\/p>\n

SI Crosby focussed on children\u2019s learning at a local primary school by funding laptops for home use. These enabled children to keep up with lessons, maintain contact with their teachers and \u2018see\u2019 their friends on-screen.<\/p>\n

Finally, many shoppers receive supermarket vouchers \u2013 but wonder how to put them to good use.\u00a0 SI Ramsbottom<\/a> members recommend liaising with local Salvation Army corps as to what the vouchers might \u2018buy\u2019. The \u2018Sally Army\u2019 knows those in need in each community!<\/p>\n

Sriya Kulupana, South Lancashire Region\u2019s Programme Action Officer said: \u201c It is heartening to hear how Soroptimists have stayed active over the past difficult months.<\/p>\n
