{"id":741,"date":"2012-11-13T18:40:32","date_gmt":"2012-11-13T17:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/?p=741"},"modified":"2019-03-05T18:00:40","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T17:00:40","slug":"kathmandu-crosby-and-cast-iron-statues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/2012\/11\/13\/kathmandu-crosby-and-cast-iron-statues\/","title":{"rendered":"Kathmandu, Crosby and Cast-iron Statues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A chance conversation between Margaret Baker (SI Bolton and Secretary, SI South Lancashire) and Jenny Stanistreet (SI Crosby) resulted in a Nepalese Soroptimist getting the chance \u2018to see the sea\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/south-lancashire\/files\/2012\/11\/Soroptimists-with-statue-on-crosby-beach.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-744\" src=\"\/south-lancashire\/files\/2012\/11\/Soroptimists-with-statue-on-crosby-beach.jpg\" alt=\"soroptimists with statue on crosby beach\" width=\"284\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/files\/2012\/11\/Soroptimists-with-statue-on-crosby-beach.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/files\/2012\/11\/Soroptimists-with-statue-on-crosby-beach-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/a>Dipa Khakurel, a hydropower engineer, is a member of one of the youngest clubs,\u00a0in Kathmandu. Margaret had travelled to <a title=\"link to nepal chartering visit\" href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/south-lancashire\/2012\/09\/19\/south-lancashire-soroptimist-in-kathmandu\/\">Nepal<\/a> when Federation President Maureen Maguire chartered the club, and had met all the new Soroptimists. Therefore, when Dipa came to the UK to attend the 2012 Federation Conference in Belfast, Margaret ensured that she was well looked after.<\/p>\n<p>It transpired that Dipa had never seen the sea, and Margaret wondered where to take her. The offer of hospitality in Crosby was, therefore, very welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the chill wind the trio walked along the beach, collected seashells, and viewed Antony Gormley\u2019s sculptures \u2018Another Place\u2019. This artwork consists of 100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometres of the foreshore, stretching almost one kilometre out to sea. Each figure \u2013 made from casts of the artist&#8217;s own body \u2013 weighs 650 kilos.
