Project Activities

Red Box Project

Towards the end of last year, one of our members read that some girls in cities
in the UK were missing days at school because their families could not afford
adequate sanitary protection for them. We later discovered that this is the case
in a number of Southampton schools, at both primary and secondary level.
The Red Box Project, which consists of a group of local women, have recently
provided every secondary school with a red box containing sanitary products,
pants and tights. Posters with information are placed on the inside of the girls’ loo doors
At Christmas, Southampton club members always make a money collection
instead of buying and sending Christmas cards to each other. Last Christmas, we
raised £190 and decided to spend it on The Red Box Project. After contacting the
women via facebook messenger to ask them what they would like us to buy we
went shopping for pants and tights. We bought 196 pairs of pants and 60 pairs
of black tights in sizes small to extra-large. These have been delivered to a local
dropping off point and will be used to ‘top up’ red boxes in schools.

Easter chocolates for TwoSaints

Some lovely chocolates in mugs were presented to the women at TwoSaints at a visit just before Easter. They were much appreciated!

February delivery for TwoSaints

Two Saints day centre put out an emergency request for socks and underwear. Southampton Soroptimists acted quickly to deliver these supplies.

Christmas Support for TwoSaints – a visit to Patrick House

Southampton Soroptimists are pleased to have been supporting women at Two Saints
since May 2017. Just before Christmas, members took 13 Christmas bags containing
gloves, socks, scarf, shower gel and other winter essentials, and 40 bags of bed linen
for women clients at Two Saints to use. We also took our first resettlement box containing essentials for moving on to more independent living. Many of these items have been donated by members and their friends, a few items have been bought brand new. The box will be given to a woman when she is ready to move on.
We have more of these to deliver as and when they are required.

We look forward to supporting women at Patrick House in future months.
Thanks to all members who have made donations and supported the
fundraising events which helped us to buy the kettles, toasters
and bath towels.

SIGBI 83rd Federation Conference in Cardiff

The annual Soroptimist Conference, held this year on 26- 28 October in Cardiff, had the theme: Step Up, Lead The Way.

We heard three excellent keynote speakers; Michael Kaufman, co-founder of the white ribbon campaign, and an expert on promoting gender equality, Mandy Hickson, who was an RAF Tornado pilot and now an inspirational speaker and Dame Katherine Grainger, Britain’s most decorated female Olympian. We heard thought provoking presentations from Soroptimist clubs about their projects and membership drive initiatives.

Women in Science Event at Richard Taunton College – 15 June 2017

Our Club partnered with Richard Taunton Sixth Form College in Southampton to organise a session to encourage girls of secondary school age to continue with studies in STEM subjects – Science,Technology, Engineering and Maths – to widen their options not only for future studies but employment opportunities.

The girls started the morning by completing a quiz designed to help them identify their personal attributes, and they then had the opportunity to read about the types of employment that suit these attributes. During a break the girls answered questions on a series of posters about women scientists.

Then, in what proved to be the most popular part of the morning, the girls were able, in groups, to question eight STEM “ambassadors” – young women who had studied STEM subjects, and who are now in a variety of jobs or postgraduate education.

On feedback forms, some of the girls’ comments were “amazing and insightful, and “we met people with cool jobs”. An accompanying teacher said “I loved it!”

Our aim now is to organise such an event annually with the Sixth Form College.

See Our Projects section for more information on this charity.
