[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”200″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Southend Soroptimists work hard at\u00a0local projects. Each year our President nominates a local charity for us to support and this year, we’re supporting Age Concern Southend. They are a small, independent charity providing support, advice and services to older people in Southend and the surrounding communities.<\/p>\n

Two members of our club represent us at the Southend Against Modern Slavery (SAMS) Partnership meetings. It is a community partnership including local charities, faith organisations and the voluntary sector. We work with local law enforcement and statutory bodies towards ending exploitation and human trafficking.<\/p>\n

Our members have completed 2 courses with SAMS. One of these is Train the Trainer and they can now give presentations on Modern Day Slavery (MDS) to other groups on behalf of SAMS.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Every month, we supply our local refuges with Welcome Bags, so that any woman seeking refuge from domestic violence has a supply of essentials.\u00a0These go to\u00a0the refuges in Southend and Basildon. We also fill overnight bags for women who go into hospital, because some patients\u00a0have no relatives to bring in toiletries.<\/p>\n

We continue to lobby our MPs about issues important to Soroptimists \u2013\u00a0MPs know who we are and respond to our enquiries. We raise awareness of issues like\u00a0education, funding cuts in our refuges, FGM\u00a0and trafficking.<\/p>\n
