<\/a><\/p>\nSylvia Fox has produced a fascinating book based on the diary of a soldier serving in the Far East during WW2 bringing us the personal memoir of an ordinary man living through an extraordinary time.<\/p>\n
Cyril Grimes was conscripted into the newly formed 9th Battalion of The Royal Sussex\u00a0Regiment in the Summer of 1940 when he was in his mid 20\u2019s. Towards the end of 1942\u00a0he found himself on a troop ship, bound for India. His Battalion, nicknamed the \u201cShiny\u00a09th\u201d was about to become part of the \u201cForgotten Army\u201d, and the push to remove the\u00a0Japanese invaders from Burma.<\/p>\n
Cyril\u2019s first sight of action was in the Arakan in 1944 and for the whole of this and the\u00a0following year, he made a daily entry in secret diaries.\u00a0 One of his fellow Sergeants, Jim Harris, discovered what he was doing, and long after the\u00a0war had ended, recounted the story to his family.\u00a0 Years later, his daughter decided to try\u00a0and find these accounts.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot Forgetting The 9th\u201d is not only the story of Cyril\u2019s war, but a tale of friendship\u00a0and discovery. The trials and tribulations of soldiering in hostile conditions, the training,\u00a0camp routines and entertainment are told in an understated but authentic voice of the\u00a0period. Cyril\u2019s character is revealed in a very readable style and we see how he deals\u00a0with everything that comes his way.<\/p>\n
Cyril\u2019s economic prose condenses his experiences into\u00a0the confined spaces of small, flimsy papered Service Diaries. The reader can follow him\u00a0on long journeys by rail, sea and other means not only in India, but also in Burma, Malaya\u00a0and Singapore. We can also share the impact of war with him as he digs trenches, gets\u00a0bombed and loses comrades to enemy action.<\/p>\n
