{"id":470,"date":"2013-07-18T10:25:48","date_gmt":"2013-07-18T10:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/southern-england\/?p=470"},"modified":"2013-07-18T15:18:06","modified_gmt":"2013-07-18T15:18:06","slug":"poole-soroptimists-present-250-cheque-in-aid-of-target-ovarian-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/southern-england\/2013\/07\/18\/poole-soroptimists-present-250-cheque-in-aid-of-target-ovarian-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"SI Poole presents \u00a3250 in aid of Target Ovarian Cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Poole Soroptimist Lynn Butterworth was presented with a cheque for \u00a3250 in aid of the charity Target Ovarian Cancer following her talk about her recent experiences on her pilgrimage and fund raising walk by \u2018The Way of St James\u2019, (El Camino de Santiago), in north-west Spain.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-471\" style=\"width: 629px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/southern-england\/files\/2013\/07\/SI-Poole-ovarian-cancer-presentation-for-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-471\" src=\"\/southern-england\/files\/2013\/07\/SI-Poole-ovarian-cancer-presentation-for-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/southern-england\/files\/2013\/07\/SI-Poole-ovarian-cancer-presentation-for-web.jpg 629w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/southern-england\/files\/2013\/07\/SI-Poole-ovarian-cancer-presentation-for-web-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Pilgrim&#8221; Lynn Butterworth (left) &amp; IPP Helen Kanolik<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lynn was inspired to undertake the walk by the death of her best friend Elaine McGuiness in 2012 of ovarian cancer.\u00a0 Consequently one of her chosen charities was <strong>Target Ovarian Cancer<\/strong>, a charity also supported by Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland.\u00a0 Lynn is also a member of Poole Rotary Club and the second charity to benefit was \u2018Autism Wessex\u2019, the club&#8217;s charity of the year<\/p>\n<p>Lynn walked for thirty eight days meeting many fellow pilgrims from different countries and backgrounds, sharing experiences such as sore feet, the best shoes to wear, the best places to rest, eat and drink the local red wine!\u00a0 Miraculously Lynn found herself needing medical help for sore feet only once during the whole journey so all her training over the Dorset hills had paid off.\u00a0 Lynn shared many photos which demonstrated the beautiful scenery, the clearly marked trail of crosses and blue and yellow shells, the various friends she made along the way and the variety of weather from snow on the mountains to glorious sunshine in Finisterre.<\/p>\n<p>A very emotional moment for Lynn was placing the stone from Sandbanks beach in Poole, given to her by the previous Mayor of Poole, Cllr Carol Evans, at the foot of the cross at Cruce de Ferro.\u00a0 Traditionally this represents the leaving of burdens and worries and the preparation for the final stage of the <em>camino<\/em>.\u00a0 On reaching the <a title=\"Cathedral of Santiago\" href=\"http:\/\/www.catedraldesantiago.es\/\" target=\"_blank\">Catedral de Santiago de Compostela<\/a> Lynn lit a candle in memory of Elaine before making the final leg of the journey to Finisterre to complete the 500 mile or \u2018One Million Steps\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Lynn thanked the club and informed them that the funds raised now exceeded \u00a32000 for \u2018Target Ovarian Cancer\u2019 and in excess of \u00a3500 for \u2018Autism Wessex\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poole Soroptimist Lynn Butterworth was presented with a cheque for \u00a3250 in aid of the&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":487,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[28,29],"class_list":["post-470","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-clubs-news","tag-el-camino-de-santiago","tag-target-ovarian-cancer"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>SI Poole presents \u00a3250 in aid of Target Ovarian Cancer | News | Blog | Events | SI Southern England<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"SI Southern England : Blog &amp; News : SI Poole presents \u00a3250 in aid of Target Ovarian Cancer : Keep up to date with the latest news, articles and events from the Soroptimists of SI Southern England .
