Abbots Langley beat Knebworth Park Under-13 girls cricket team by just 5 runs to win the fifth annual Soroptimist Audrey Collins Hertfordshire Cricket\u00a0\u00a0League.<\/p>\n

\"94-Cricket<\/a>This year\u2019s final was again held at Knebworth Park \"93-Denise<\/a>between two sides at full strength with 16 County players involved so a close match was always anticipated.<\/p>\n

The game was played in good spirits and the event was very well organised with a well prepared wicket which encouraged the good standard of cricket played with refreshments available for players and spectators alike through the day. The shield was awarded to the winners as in past years by Denise Powell, President of Soroptimist International St Albans and District who have supported girls cricket in the County for five years now.\u00a0\"92-Denise<\/a><\/p>\n

Reflecting on his side\u2019s success, lead coach Phil Lewins said: \u201cI\u00a0believe the League and competition had been a catalyst for the girls\u2019 cricket in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denise Powell, President of Soroptimist International St Albans and District said \u201cthere can be no doubt that there is great prestige\u00a0in winning the trophy and that the Soroptimist Audrey Collins\u00a0under\u00a013\u2019s cricket award is prized and is therefore making a real difference which is a fitting tribute to Audrey.\u00a0It is great to know that girls\u2019 cricket is a national priority and that we have been able to assist in its development in Hertfordshire. We feel sure that Audrey would be very proud. It is a privilege for Soroptimists to be part of the event, and to see that our continuation of this support is so highly valued.\u201d Denise\u00a0is pictured above with the winning team after the presentation of \u00a0the shield and trophy.<\/p>\n

This competition is sponsored by the St Albans Soroptimists\u00a0as a lasting legacy to\u00a0past member Audrey Collins who died in 2010. Audrey was an inpirational Soroptimist \u2013 a\u00a0pioneer of Women\u2019s cricket and\u00a0a trail blazer for women. She received an OBE for services to women\u2019s cricket and was\u00a0one \"\"<\/a>of the first 10 female members admitted by the MCC in 1999.
