A grey start turned into a nice sunny morning as we watched 2 talented teams of U13 Girls battle it out for the Soroptimist Girls Under 13’s Audrey Collins Cricket Trophy. The finalists this year were the holders Abbots Langley and Stevenage. Soroptimist Club President\u00a0Denise presented the Abbots Langley team with the shield and trophy and in the 2nd picture both teams of girls are intermingled as suggested by the girls\u2019 coaches.<\/p>\n

\"35-CricketA 20 over game based on the rules of Kwik Cricket, this is enjoyment for, and fair play by, all players in the team.\u00a0Teams start the innings with 200 on the board and runs are added either by the batting side scoring runs or the bowlers bowling wides or no balls (2 run penalty\u00a0awarded to the batting side).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5 runs are deducted when a batter is deemed to be out but the batter does not leave the pitch until their allotted 4 overs have been played.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 These rules ensure that every player in the team spends an equal amount of time on the pitch regardless of size, strength or ability.\u00a0Stevenage batted first and after a slow start, due to some excellent bowling from Abbots\u00a0Langley, started to put some runs on the board. After their 20\u00a0overs with the bat Stevenage\u2019s score\u00a0stood at 250 runs, on \"36-Cricketthe face of it not too high a score to beat. Abbots Langley then came into bat, but again owing to some excellent wickets being taken by Stevenage early on, Abbots Langley score was kept down and it was game on for both teams. By the end of Abbots Langley\u2019s 20 overs with a score of 270, they ran out worthy winners of the Audrey Collins Trophy for the 3rd<\/sup> year in a row.<\/p>\n

This will be the last year that some of the girls from both teams can play for the U13s.\u00a0\u00a0 Definitely ones to watch for the future and how lovely if our trophy has helped these girls to one day play for England!\u00a0The shield was awarded to the winners as in past years by Denise Powell, President of Soroptimist International St Albans and District who have supported girls cricket in the County for six years now.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his side\u2019s successes, lead coach Phil Lewins has said: \u201cI\u00a0believe the League\u00a0and competition has been a catalyst for success of girls\u2019 cricket in the area.\u201d<\/address>\n
Denise Powell, President of Soroptimist International St Albans and District said \u201cIt is great to know that girls\u2019 cricket is a national priority and that we have been able to assist in its development in Hertfordshire. We feel sure that Audrey would be very proud. It is a privilege for Soroptimists to be part of the event, and to see that our continuation of this support is so highly valued.\u201d\u00a0<\/address>\n

This competition is sponsored by the St Albans Soroptimists\u00a0as a lasting legacy to\u00a0past member Audrey Collins who died in 2010. Audrey was an inpirational Soroptimist \u2013 a\u00a0pioneer of Women\u2019s cricket and\u00a0a trail blazer for women. She received an OBE for services to women\u2019s cricket and was\u00a0one \"\"<\/a>of the first 10 female members admitted by the MCC in 1999.
